Once Disney topples the whole post-ROTJ continuity (as rumors have it) it won't matter anyway, though.
Continuity used to be a lot better anyway (although not perfect) before Clone Wars changed the Mandalorians (vs. the Traviss books) and now the Asajj Ventress character arc (vs. the comics). While the 3D series has grown on me (the majority of the season 4 and 5 episodes was actually very good, and so much better than the dreadful "Roger Roger" episodes in season 1 and 2), Star Wars has now reached the point where we can forget about continuity altogether.
(Stupid move. Really stupid. Diminishes the worth of Star Wars as a saga. But then, Disney doesn't want a saga, just a franchise. Duh.)

I don't say that the Disney movies will necessarily be bad by themselves, and it would be quite possible for them to just jump ahead 500 years and build their own version of the GFFA without disrupting the existing storylines or bothering with the EU at all. But I doubt that they have any interest in the continuity, and I am very afraid that they will want to exploit the iconic characters like Vader or Boba Fett without mercy.
It'll take a really good storyteller to breathe new life into the franchise, and probably tieing up and gagging a few executives, too.

Given that it's going to be Abram's in charge of things I'm rather optimistic about the whole thing. I do agree that they should just go away from Skywalkers and Jedi in general but I seriously doubt that's going to happen. I have heard that they are going to be doing two stand alone movies centered around Han Solo and Boba Fett prior to A New Hope and Empire.

its the consolidation of all media. disney buying it, apparently they were told to finish everything from Clone Wars, rather than stop work but the work will probably end up on a direct to DVD feature.
I remember the original design that was scrapped for Darth Maul, but Tartakovsky's simplification made it graphically stronger.
