I had 'Flame and the Black Stallion' once... I don't think I ever read it. I liked the cover though, there was a red horse and a black horse rearing at eachother.

i admittedly liked Black Beauty more than i did any of the Black Stallion books... i like my talking animal books (Watership Down, Plague Dogs, Felidae, The Sight, Silverwing, Sandeagozu which i think you also will really dig)

but anyway yeah i remember liking Flame because he was pretty much Black Stallion's rival and kind of a dick, at least for as much personality as Walter Farley ever gave his animals X)

I didn't really like the black stallion books either, I thought they were just ripoffs of black beauty. (though I was young, and they're not really that similar I guess)
and I liked flame better too :>

ha! yeah, i always thought so too. i do remember i also enjoyed Jim Kjelgaard's books, they were like the Black Stallion but about dogs (focusing on loyal dog characters without the dogs talking etc.)

oh, i also really really dug Smoky the Cow Horse by Will James - i was so happy when i scored a Breyer Smoky off of eBay years ago, he is still proudly frolicking on a shelf back at the parents' X)
