I kinda fancy the "Plunger" could be a switch that releases a blast of compressed air that pushes the bridge up, plus activates a light that flashes for an instant. To add to the illusion, talcum powder, or flour could be heaped in the cavity around the air nozzle to add "smoke." Since you've got the sound system, you could possibly hook up a tape recorder with suitable explosion and crashing steel sounds. (No screaming giraffes? Do Giraffes even scream?) The idea behind the simple set up is that it can be performed again and again. I could see folks gladly paying for a raffle to play "Gomez" and "Blow up" the trains.
