Chenita, a female cougar (Puma concolor) at Jungle Cat World Zoo, shows her displeasure as I move in for a photograph. Unlike her mate Geronimo, Chenita is usually a bit skeptical of me. Fortunately, this was just a warning and she maintained a wary eye on me as I did my work around her enclosure.

Great photo and are any number of reasons she is hissing at you... it could be the scents you are tracking around on your clothing.
At one Zoo they have one cougar that will hiss at you if you just walk by, but will many times will come up to the fence and rub on it if you just stand there. I watched them with one of the handlers and they act like a big house cat with the Ohh pet me thing. You can tell they enjoy the interaction with their human.

No... Chenita has never really felt comfortable around me. It could have been a bad first impression I made (making loud noises while cleaning etc.), but I can't be sure. They will pick and choose who they like, some like me and some don't. That's okay...you can't win 'em all.
