Makes alot of sense. She does describe some of the fauna of the Andalite home world as having multiple limbs and eyes, like their six winged bird. I bet the base vertebral structure on their planet involves 4 sets of limbs(with the last set of the Andalites being a vestigial blade on the end of their tails*shrug*
