I think it's more that damsel and dragon are all prepped to go through the motions on this, and then the knight shocks them all by showing up drunk and stumbling around without his armor and weaponless. Perhaps it seems wrong to put him out of his misery in this state, and he won't be hurting anyone without his weapon. But they're supposed going through a classic action scene here with romance or complete despair to follow up, so what to do? Leave him to sober up and go have some...cake?
I did notice your later post, I just thought your initial comment was perfect jumping-off point for the take I came up with while looking at the picture and some of the comments. I also just realized that if his weapon is a club he might have mistaken her for pinata in his drunken state, which could also have led to some cake, but with a gentlemanly dragon with a belly full of drunk night.
Depends on if he wants meat that comes with it's own blood-alcohol marinade and more digestible clothing than armor. Otherwise if he wants cake and dinner he'll either have to go find some other meat and risk the possibility of being found by sober knights sent by the damsel's father, or have dessert before dinner. ;) And if she really wants to survive, is...curious, and/or the drunk knight is too much farther from perfect; she may cooperate better in having cake in exchange for her life, so McKnight for dinner it may be.
