Merlin drew these last year as concept art for a possible comic version of 'Project Epsilon', the sequel to Project Future, but I put them down somewhere and forgot about them.
Nick is on the left, and he bears a very strong resemblance to
sunblink's character, Keaton, but is considerably less evil.
On the right, Richard Fa'Rana, also a jackal, albeit a snow white one. Richard's original design concept was "What would Dan [from DMFA] be like if his mother had raised him in her own image?". Fortunately he has strayed from that horrifying ideal somewhat over the course of the story.
Hopefully sometime we'll see concept art for Sheila Ketonia, the last of the core students from the series. Though it would be nice to see Mike the osprey griffin and Daniel Kamei'Sin as well.

I really like both of these characters in the comic. They're very well written! There's just something I find really interesting about Nick, though. He seems like a good example of "nurture" winning out over "nature". By blood, he comes from Clan Jyraneth, but having not been raised around it, he is almost the polar opposite of everything one would expect from a Jyraneth (from what we've led to believe so far, about them). I can't wait to see more of him!
Thanks! Partly that was inspired by some of Sunblink's notes and such on Keaton's youth. In particular, this:

...because it is a nurture thing. Most Jyraneth aren't naturally vicious, but they are brought up that way. Which reminds me: http://missmab.com/Comics/Vol_658.php
As for Nick, unfortunately we don't see him again for quite a while - the next few chapters will look at people's backstories, Syd in particular. The good news is that after that, Nick will feature much more regularly.

The second one made me LOL xD
The first kind of reminds me of a conversation I had with a USMC recruiter (who are basically a human version of Jyraneth). Ive had quite a few relatives in the Corp and they all told me to join any branch EXCEPT the Marines.
"So, you wanna join the Marine Corp?"
"Well, you guys have a very important job, and I thank you for it, but ya know, they say 'Marines are born, not made' and I don't think I was born a Marine..."
"Oh, sure you were! We can make you one!"
"No, I don't think I could cut it. 'A Marine is first and foremost a rifleman' and I don't think I have the killer mindset.[SIC]"
"We can change that![SIC]"
And the dude actually seemed excited about this! It seemed like the intro to a remake of Full Metal Jacket.
