So, seeing as you guys are awesome and responded so quick to my commission journal I thought I'd toss out one of the things I was working on today to say thankyou for paying attention to me. >.>
So this is a first draft of a critter I'm working on. It's based on the Australian Azolla fern, a little floating plant that can create thick mats of vegetation. The idea of this was a creature that was essentially a set of enchanted stones that form a body around themselves out of the flesh of the plant, and it stalks over the waterways protecting them from those that would destroy the balance. And eating canetoad tadpoles. I'm not entirely happy with the body shape, I think the next version will be jacana based instead. I've been around siamese cats and greyhounds too long and draw waaaaay too many things in those shapes.

I think part of the reason is that art seems to be valued simply for its own sake, rather than for its purpose, something unique to each artist. I draw as a way of exploring and externalizing my understanding of the world, and what I would like to see in it. The thing about it is that nothing is simple, the tiniest bacterium has such a rich life history that reams of material could be written about it and its myriad connections to other aspects of existence. For me, the key to creating is not conjuring something from nothing but trying to mix ingredients and themes and challenge my own aesthetics, find different ways of portraying something, while at the same time taking pleasure in the process and the result and the sheer joy of discovering and learning. I'm not really a creator, I'm a cook.
That's why I love art like this. The imagination needed to paint a picture of something like, say, mountains, is nothing compared to 'cook' up something like this. Yes, those mountains might be beautiful to the eye, but to the mind they are rather bland. Hell, I can look out my window and see those mountains in the distance. I try to imagine them not as mere mountains but as sleeping giants, or a feudal dragon's territory, or something like that. But now I'm starting to rant like the art snob I am. Anywho, absolutely beautiful art, I love the whole concept and back-story! Just looking at this I'd say you're both a cook and an amazing artist!
