During the Second World War Bassano del Grappa was invaded by the German troops of Adolf Hitler and the city became a focal point of the Italian resistance against the Nazism and Fascism.
It was in this city that the main partisan brigades of the Italian resistance that fought against the Nazis operated.
The Nazis made ​​several war crimes against the city in an attempt to crush the partisan bands: the most dramatic event which suffered the resistance was the "roundup of the Grappa" of September 1944 (more than 500 dead and 400 prisoners), which ended September 26, 1944 with 31 executions in the streets of the city. Responsible for these atrocities was the corporal of the SS Karl Franz Tausch.

You see the trees that grow near to the street? On each of these tree on the 26 of September 1944 a partisan was hanged on each tree. This is the reason for which this street is named "Viale dei Martiri" that can be translated as Avenue of the martyrs I think.
