Poem number four for the month. A prompt on the NaPoWriMo website asked for a sea shanty. I thought it was an interesting idea so I gave it a shot.
There's a surprisingly large amount of information about shanties on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_shanty
In short, shanties have call and response format and have a repetitive and rhythmic feel, due to being sung while they worked the ships.
I used "Haul Away Joe" for the rhythm of my shanty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvBHdw-EqLM
The refrain sounds rather similar so I wanted to change it, but I liked how it sounded with the call so I kept it as is.
