I was standing on a platform in Turpan China waiting for a train. Somebody else pointed out a brown stain on the platform. "What's that?" Our guide said, "Oh that. That's blood. That's from the last beggar that made the mistake of begging on the platform." So of course, somebody else asked "Why don't they clean it up?" And our guide responded, "That's left there as a reminder to the next beggar."
Very simple and effective. I suspect it worked better than the usual "No begging" signs.

morbidly fascinating :O
makes me think back to japan and how if you ever saw someone remove their shoes on the platform it meant they were going to jump and that you should run and get a station master as quickly as possible
...and i only just now realized i was possibly one of two students in my group who had the word for 'attempted suicide' in my vocabulary. huh.

Ah Turpan... The Knott's Berry Farm of China. Everything was done in wagon wheels, rope and weathered wood.
Right in front of the hotel we were staying at, they had a camel on a 5 meter tether walking around in circles in a pen that you could walk up to and see if you could get it to spit at you.
And decidedly odd things on the menu like "Cowboy Bob rice cakes."
Admittedly, because we were that far west, a majority of the residents were Chinese Muslim and as a result most of the food was Halal. No pork, but the lamb was to die for.
