I have always loved swashbuckling movies. So on a whim I sent Lionus and Freaky Fox back to the days when swashes were being buckled on, daring do was being done, romance was being consummated, and heroic sword fights were being fought heroically.
Unfortunately I found that while Freaky is all for romance, he is a bit “light” in the heroics department -- tending to let others handle that for him.
Originally this picture was just a smallish-sized pencil sketch from quite a while back. I brought it into my “studio” and rendered it in a style that hopefully resembles a frame taken from a comic book. A comic book probably titled something like “The Road to Musketeer-land”.

it stands for esquire which is a term denoting social status. Always rather vague in its extent, the term carries little social distinction today The term is British in origin. Ultimately deriving from the mediaeval squires who assisted knights, the term came to be used automatically by men of gentle birth. Thus use of the word postnominally represented nothing more than the claim to be a gentleman. More specifically, though, a distinction was made between men of the upper and lower gentry, who were "esquires" and "gentlemen" so basically he's upperclass
"An unofficial title of respect, having no precise significance, sometimes placed, esp. in its abbreviated form, after a man's surname in formal written address: in the U.S., usually applied to lawyers, women as well as men; in Britain, applied to a commoner considered to have gained the social position of a gentleman. Abbreviation: Esq."
Freaky is a bit of a snob I'm afraid, putting on airs about being at a higher social level than the people he usually can be found with. So when he signs his name (usually to documents which are entirely legal) he always adds that "Esq.", after his name to impress his victims -- er, clients.

oy. I had to look up those words... (now I know why the nickname of that wrestler, Irvin R. Shyster, seemed to fit very well; I always thought it was just a name)
sounds about befitting. one can also expect him to wield large amounts of Mindless Minions ™ most of the time, bragging about it instead of taking off his enemies with the sword in his hand.
in short, a nice, reliable friend.

Er .... um ... yeah sorta, but not as bad at the Cardinal. Oh wow, the Cardinal is sneaky, underhanded and conneying. He's trying to get the Queen and the young prince in trouble with the King and ... and ... um ... yeah, the Cardinal's a wolf too.

Thanks Skunktoy.
But I think we'll have to wait until Hollywood gets off it's decades' long "Everyone is a Victim" kick before a studio will take a chance on a good swashbuckler movie again. Heros (or heroines) in those types of movies generally are characters that are portrayed as not needing a couple of sessions in rehab.

Oh Lionus really is a good friend of Freaky's despite the small vulpine's habit of embroiling him in "sure fire" plans that always seem to misfire. After all, isn't a friend someone 'who still likes you despite your faults?'
I particularly line the scene in the first Indiana Jones movie where as he is packing to go on the 'Raiders' adventure he replies to Marcus Brody's warnings of danger by tossing a gun into his open luggage and saying, "You know what a cautious guy I am". Gawd, I love those great lines that heros toss off so casually.

I have three versions of the story on DVD as well as most of the swashbuckling "classics" (The Sea Hawks, Robin Hood, Don Juan, etc.) and I never tire of watching them and re-watching them. I've learned from them that swashbuckling heroes don't get to dramatically swing across rooms from chandeliers if they eat too many candy bars, 3 Musketeers or otherwise.
Actually Freaky has one of those "law diplomas" up on his "office" wall. The kind that you can buy for $30 through an advertisement printed on the inside of a match book cover.
Of course he says he'll "get all that book learning done later" (after he's duped a couple of rich clients in order to pay for it).
First impressions aside, Freaky really is a good guy (if you stretch the meaning of "good"). A fact that he’d really not want anyone to know since in his belief “Good guys are losers!”
His usual modus operandi is to take any case if the check for solving it (he's also a part-time private investigator (another matchbook cover)) is large enough.
Naturally he'll get Lionus to accompany him with an explanation of how easy the case will be and that 'it's all to help out a poor kids’ place'. He knows that 6'4" Lionus is good to have around when irate customers want to stomp on the smallish fast-talking double-dealing vulpine.
Despite Freaky's twisting and scheming, Lionus usually manages to untangle Freaky's double and triple-crosses -- and save that orphans' home in the bargain.

With enough kindness, gentle guidance and lots and lots of patience, even people like Freaky can become a good person. Of course in the meantime I want to kill him, but I figure that is only a passing reaction on my part to all the "exciting adventures" (his words) he gets me into.
"Goldenmane (he never uses a person's first name), if it wasn't for me you'd be old, fat and flabby by now. I bring excitement into your life!"

But man, isn't that just like the manager of a group these days. :p
Poor Lionus. The "Oh shi-!" look is awesome. XD
Suddenly, Rys pops in! A member of L'Ordre du Saint-Esprit!
*starts jumping around with invisible sword*
Ha ha! Take this! And that! And some of this! Epee poke to the butt!

With the battle quickly decided and the Cardinal's guards dispatched or scattered, Freaky returns to the scene. He says with a smug expression, "Of course. That's why I left -- to go get help. You didn't think I was deserting you did you, Lionus?"
The big lionmorph, his arm around Rys' shoulders in gratitude for the timely and much needed help, says "Yeah, sure Freaky, you saved the day -- again." He gives Rys a secret wink that says he knows different.
“Let’s head for the tavern for some drinks!” says Freaky, with no intention of paying.
Ah, reinforcements for the good guy! See?! The good guys DO win in the end!
Thanks for the helping paw, Rys.

Rys grins, the action causing his whiskers to fan out just a little.
"Mm, sure did save the day. Such a brave leader, and looking out for his comrades too. Willing to turn his unprotected back to the enemy, risking his hind end to find help. I tell ya, couldn't ask for better," he chuckles, smile tugging at the corners of his lips while flicking his right eyebrow up sharply but slightly, amused, in acknowledgment of the wink. A cold drink sounded awesome right then, too. He figured Lionus might even need those drinks in this squad to keep sane. :p
Hehehe, anytime bruddah lion. ;)

I've had other folks mention to me that sometimes their watch-list mechanisms seem to misfire occasionally and they miss submissions from FA artists or writers.
However, considering how much we have to "pay" monthly to be members of FurAffinity I'd say it was a small irritant to have to contend with. <joke>
One could periodically go to the pages of the artists/writers we have on our watch lists and actually thumb through their galleries just to make sure that we haven't missed out on something incredibly awesome.

Ummm, my inspiration for this pic came from watching "The Three Musketeers" movies several times.
Though I do have a PC game called "Pirates" that allows one's character to engage other ship's captains in sword fights. That's fun, as long as your fingers hold out pressing the various keyboard keys to lunge, parry, thrust, retreat, slash and go forwards. Nothing worse then having your fingers begin to cramp up when some 2-bit merchant ship captain suddenly gets the idea into his head that he really can take you on. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!!

Pirates is a cool game^^, That reminds me that i have to remember to buy it again:p I borrowed my copy away and it was stolen:s As in, someone broke in and /stole/ their computer!!:s
I'm kinda wondering if i should get the newest "Pirates" game that came out... You can apparently go treasure hunting there too:) That's gotta be cool:p I kinda need a new, /fun/, game soon... All those action and horror games are getting kinda boring...

The new version of "Pirates!" allows you to sail all around the Caribbean in (hopefully) better and better ships, romancing the different governors' daughters, exchanging broadsides with warships and merchantmen, battling the garrisons ashore of different towns (don’t try to take Maracaibo with a crew of only 20!), while trying to find the clues or the bad guy who kidnapped family and rescue them.
I've spent many happy hours adventuring in “Pirates!” and will go back to it again.

Thanks very much AJ. I tried to handle the dialogue and plot set-up the way they did in the old-fashion swashbuckling movies. And working with comic book linework and bright coloring "style", with its simple backgrounds, is a nice way of loosening up after spending a lot of time on more highly detailed pictures.
Freaky tends to view all of Time as a vast treasure house for him to plunder. And to avoid any consequences affecting the Future (our Now), he goes after items that were destroyed or totally lost in the Past. Paintings that were destroyed when Rome was burned, jewels that went down with Titanic, scrolls (mostly pornography) that were lost when the Library of Alexandria was burned, etc.
As for me being gullible when it comes to Freaky's welfare ... coincidentally I just came from my mail box (it's a tight fit, but I'm agile) where someone had sent me a letter about ‘Unconditional Acceptance being about Loving People and Using Things - Not Loving Things and Using People'. Feaky's yet to learn that lesson, and someone has to show him how that works. I have faith that underneath that conniving, manipulating, scheming, devious coat of vulpine fur there’s someone who could be a very good person. It's just a matter of surviving long enough until he's ready to come out that is the problem.
