Master Higgins, such a card. I am sorely tempted to draw him more. FFFFFING HARD AS BALLS ADVENTURE ISLAND 2

Hrm, a good point- I guess the first step is to decide whether repetitive tasks that you will inevitably have to do again the next game qualify.. If such things do count then a LOT of characters would make the list ^.^ Pretty much any character that appeared in more than one game, really.
Hmmmm.....I'd think on a game by game basis then. Since some only ever get one or two games, aswell.
I'd think a major qualification may be how hard the game actually is adds to the 'oh god damn this' effect. Else even if they did say, go to hell, or such, but the game wasn't so hard comparatively, the tasks they do become just not as trying. So Higgins getting screwed over so much is akin to battletoads screwing you over. But say, whassis name, Kratos going to actual hell is not very problematic in comparison.

Here are a few that might be worth considering;
The guys from Contra (NES/SNES)
Pacman
The guy from Ninja Gaiden
Karnov
The guy from Wizards and Warriors
The guy from Ghouls and Ghosts
The Doom marine from the first game(In the other games he had a decent ending but in the first game his reward for each completed campaign was to find that he was headed into an even harder fight).

I remember hacking the game as a kid to have a jump that would only end if you released the button. Would jump over ALL the stage. And without hitting certain items to get time back on the clock, it would sometimes take MINUTES for Higgins to finally fall from the deepest cosmos and off the bottom of the screen.
I've only ever played Super Adventure Island 2 for the SNES, but I've gotta say, I love that game to bits.
I rented it once as a kid back when there were video rental stores before the days of Netflix and Gamefly. But since I'd never played a Metroidvania style game like that before, and since those rental games didn't usually come with the instruction manual because the last person to rent it didn't put it back in the box, I had no idea what I was doing.
Well many years later, I got a Wii and hugged it forever because IT IS AWESOME.
Downloaded that game onto the Wii and finally got to enjoy it; and boy did I ever.
