Yeah, I remember me and
befpraizy were having this conversation one time (funny enough, Swatkats was an example he brought up). However, I also remember it having a lot more depth to it as well

depends on the show. The Sonic the Hedgehog, Disney, and Warner Brothers shows for the most part were across the board consistent. The only shows that really did that. Were Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Swat Kats, and Samurai pizza cats, Thundercats, and Biker Mice from Mars. and thats is just off the top of my head.
Kind of think it was what they thought the age range would like in their characters. Younger audiences had cuter characters that tended to have similar levels of anthropomorphism usually actually looking close to their animal counterpart. Seemed once you started getting to the older audiences they wanted to make the female characters more seductive especially if they were heroes and the male characters more badass and strong so they kept more of the animalistic traits. Guess it also was to help with telling the difference between the genders. *shrugs*
It's a neat convention that runs from the very earliest days of furry cartoons. I mean, just look at the difference between Roger and Jessica rabbit (lol)
Actually I think my favorite example of this is in the comic Black Sad, which you should totally google image right now. The men are really full-anthro and the women are much more humanlike, it creates a neat dynamic. I'm pretty happy with using the convention as long as I'm aware that's what I'm doing. ^w^

Its kinda like Mavericks in the Megaman X series...
All the BIG BADS have to be human, the lower echelon mavs are either animals or simple machines.
I believe they made them more human, so they could play up the sex appeal, for those poor, lonely animators XD
