Perhaps not the best idea, but then the best ideas don't make for good stories. A very pregnant Dixie, an anthro white-tailed deer doe, is vacationing in Australia while she awaits the birth of her twin fawns. While in a more remote region of the Outback (once again, admittedly not the wisest of ideas, given her delicate condition), she and her mate park the land rover they rented in favor of going on a little walk. Or waddle, as the case may be for the expectant mother. Given the remoteness of their location and the heat of the day, they each decide to disrobe themselves - for the fun of it, and as a form of love and trust in each other. Having found a fun and interesting wooded area - an oasis in the desert - the two lovers happen to separate momentarily. Nothing serious, just sometimes it's fun to explore on one's own.
While down in a small, grassy clearing surrounded by gum trees, Dixie chances upon an old oilskin vest - oddly enough, one her size, as if it were tailored for a female body. Not thinking any harm could come of it, she bends down carefully to pick it up. She suddenly has some peculiar urge to put it on, as if hypnotized. She does so, and it fits like a glove! Nothing goes on, so she figures she'll bring it back with her as a souvenir. Nobody out here could miss such a thing, after all!
A few minutes later, she feels an odd tingling sensation, and looking down, she sees things beginning to change! Her fur is turning color, her arms are getting smaller, her fingers are shortening, and her feet and tail are extending and growing stronger by the second!
*Insert neat transformation description here, as class is about to start*
So Dixie finds herself no longer the doe she once was, but rather a very lovely, yet also very feral kangaroo flyer! She's grateful she's still kept her sentience! Concerned for a moment, she says a word, and sighs a sigh of relief as she recognizes her voice still as her own. But... oh dear, what of her babies!
Looking down, two pairs of tiny eyes peer from the new pouch at her belly. Peeking up out of the furry hole, two tiny kangaroo noses, followed by two pairs of tiny kangaroo ears, then the whole faces of her babies, now turned from unborn fawns to fully-developed kangaroo joeys, staring back at her, wondering what's going on! Given deer are placental mammals and kangaroos marsupials, Dixie, given her biological background, can easily infer that she's skipped the birthing process altogether, and that her children have already been accommodated to the faster maturation rate of the species she now was! And looking down at her newborn children for the first time, tears of joy well up in her eyes as she finally holds them in her changed paws for the first time - the sudden joy simply a miracle to the young mother.
As she holds her children, alive and sweet to her breast, thoughts of whether or not she'll be able to change back, and whether or not her mate will still want to be with her do permeate her mind, but for now, regardless of what she or her babies are, she'll take simple delight in knowing that both of her beautiful twins are happy and healthy.

Thanks! Yeah, it just wouldn't make sense for a pregnant placental mammal to still be gravid at that point in her children's gestation upon being transformed into a marsupial! I guess it's just not something that happens that often! It's good for the children though - momma Dixie needs to spend more time actively seeing, playing with and taking care of them.
I know right? One thing I was playing with here is whether or not their state of awareness would also change as a result of the transformation. My thoughts are that since all of them were transformed into kangaroos, their state of consciousness would adapt to accommodate the sudden change. Basically, their thoughts are that they've always been kangaroos, and that they were born and climbed into their mother's pouch months ago. It's Mom who doesn't know what she's talking about and is just being weird. :P
