Today's payday, and as is my custom, I put away a little in the savings account every time I get paid. Not in dollars, of course - my faith that the Federal Reserve banking cartel's U$ dollar note will retain it's "worth" into the future is hovering somewhere around zero.
So every month, I put a little pile of non-perishable goods away. Long term canned food. Ammo. Tools. Medical supplies. Heck, toilet paper (you don't know what a luxury nice, soft toilet paper is until you run out!). Here you see this month's savings.

Box of .308 Winchesters.
Might consider packing away some .22 LR in Ammo cans. Super useful for basic small game hunting.
.22 LR also has a 20% one shot stop percentage. 5 rounds of .22 is about the same as 5 #4 Buckshot pellets.
With practice anyone can fire a .22 at five rounds a second out of a semi-auto rifle.

If this was about protection, that money would be better spent on, ya know, actual protection. Like, locks, solid doors, bulletproof glass, heck even iron bars for the windows if a person is really paranoid. And if a person's a survivalist, then the money would be better suited on getting a good solid fallout shelter.
No, there is only one reason I can think of for owning a gun and this much a ammunition: fantasy.

The Federal Reserve is an integral part of how the United States monitary system works. More generally, woney is an abstract concept, which has value because the government says it has value. In a normal, healthy economy, there is slight inflation, and money you have today will have less buying power than it will have years in the future.
But sort of "checking out" of the monetary system of today and creating a savings account exclusively of "real goods" means a person is counting on there not being worthwhile money in the past. In fact, it's a gamble that had better be right, or else the person that does this will be like the jackass in http://www.cracked.com/video_18511_.....pocalypse.html who spent all his money on beans and now does not have money that can be spent on things besides beans.
Point being, say Karno decides to spend all his spare money now on military-grade ammunition, not for target practice, but as a "savings account." Now say that one of those Black swan events survivalists are so worked up about do not happen, and worse, let's say something happens (maybe laser guns are invented or ammunition sale becomes illegal) that either makes bullets worthless or too dangerous to exchange for money or other goods. Then, Karno would retire with a worthless pile of metal and cordite while the people that actually had faith in the government, the US dollar, and the would and put their money in a savings account would be able to retire with actual money they can use on whatever they like.
Everyone makes assumptions on what the future will be like. Creating a savings account in bullets is in indication one assumes bullets will be worth more than money in the future* and usually indicates a very paranoid mind.
*Which has sub-assumptions that a. there will be a low supply of bullets in the future b. There will be high demand for bullets in the future c. Exchanging bullets for goods or money is either legal, or the government has collapsed to the point that "legal" is a meaningless term and d. Whatever factors are causing a, b, and c to be true has spared said person from death.

Gold as opposed to money has rougly the same assumptions, benefits, and downsides as bullets, with three exceptions that I can think of: You do not use up gold in the same way as ammunition, which after fired, ceases to be useful; it's very unlikely that the element gold will become illegal; and unless huge supplies of gold are found, or people suddenly stop considering gold to be valuable, gold still will be valuable in the future.
if the US is overrun, what makes you think the rest of the world won't be? Just ask the group from Dawn of the Dead (The remake). They get to another continent only to find it's overrun, too. Besides..if it happens...we're all fucked, and nobody is getting out alive unless they move to some place like Alaska, where it's too cold for zombies to walk around without turning into deadcicles.
Well, Zombies might be possible, but a Zombie Apocalypse of the sort seen in Dawn of the Dead is about as scientifically possible as the world being overrun by a gateway to Hell.

Try finding any, these days. The Department of Homeland Security dried up the supply of storage food with a giant purchase (to go with their purchase of 1.6 BILLION rounds of ammo, enough to supply their normal training needs for 100 years). A paranoid sort would think that the DHS is buying up all that food because they think that getting food will be hard when the cities are burning. Good thing I'm an optimist who'd never think that.
I can see your point there. I used to live in Yakima, which is rather nice also. But I still would rather have my savings in bullets, stored food and other 'consumables' than cash or bank accounts. I'm wondering right now whether I'd be smarter to pull my savings out of my IRA and invest it ammo and food. North Korea is scaring me pretty badly. Damn crazies!!!
From what I heard all those rounds were bought by the Marines not HLS. Plus it will do no good against A10's, Cobras, Bradleys, Abrams, armed drones, etc. etc. Plus I know the real reason people are stockpiling; for zombies that are actually alive and do not look like them, just like the president; in other words against the "darkies": African Americans, native Americans, Jews, anyone else from the so called Middle East no matter what their religion is...I could go one for hours. I know many will get mad at me for revealing this truth and THAT in of itself will say a lot, but that is the nature of a certain percentage of this country that none of those verboten groups belong to. No use arguing the point with me because I will not change my mind on this; the REAL history of this country and my own personal experience has taught me that many will not face the truth of what I said and are probably fooling themselves or know better and just want to fool others.
Seriously Karno, all those things wont help you much. You need to learn Survivalist Skills. How to live off the land & eat things normal people would not eat, such as worms & roaches. All those Canned items will run out soon, along with your bullets (unless you have enough to fill up a full sized supermarket). & yes, I appreciate soft tissue papers on my rear. You'll also need 3 Seashells for when your buttpaper runs out.
I understand. Since the election, folks of all stripes have been panic buying ammo. Slowly more munitions will become available. Look up copes distributing, they get shipments in regularly. Nice thing is when you buy with your credit card, they give you the option to pay off your order over three months, a huge help to be sure!
When banning assault rifles to pop guns is none of the Government's concern, you'll be there.
When they use Kovorkian treatments to "Cure" Howard Stern, You'll be there.
And when we're finally free to use the light bulbs of our choice,
And the People sing out as one with full voice...
You'll be there, you'll be there.
(Apologies to Kenny Rhodes of "The Foremen.")

always good to stock up; we've got close to 10 mags of 7.62/39 for my mates rifle, about 2000 .22lr for my smg, pistol, and lever action, and a good 100 for his 9mm.
a few weeks ago we could have sold one of those 20 round boxes of 7.62 for close to $60, thanks to all the ammo the gov is buying.
Phew, looks expensive. But in the long run, as long as you don't get robbed or anything, I definitely agree that the paper note is dropping in worth every day and physical goods is a much better investment. All those jokes about burying gold in the yard don't seem so crazy now, and I feel uncomfortable admitting that right now.
If the thought makes you uncomfortable, it is time to examine what it is that makes you feel so. There is no doubt to anyone who is paying attention, that we as a Nation are facing unprecidented bad times very soon if things do not change for the better. I do not think they will. You must decide what to do, and I wholeheartedly suggest you begin to prepare as best you can, as soon as you can,
How much did that one box of .308 cost?
I just got some 7.62x39 for my Mini-30 at a cost of nearly $12 a box for ammo that usually costs $4 to $5. I've seen $30 boxes of .22lr winchester 550 rounds going for nearly $200 in some cases on gunbroker.com lately. Even the local police have feelers out to wait in line in the mornings at local walmarts and gun shops. The guy at wally world says about 30 guys a day wait for the store to open and get as much as possible. They are even out of 12ga shot shells of all types. I don't know if this is just in Commiefornia or all over.

Ask for their catalog, plenty of stuff to choose from for the zombie invasion :)

You know, as someone that used to reload, /a lot/ back in the day - buying bullets, powder, primers in bulk, is a hell of a lot cheaper then made rounds. When I was doing it, it worked out to about 1/4 the price. Of course your initial investment in a press, polisher and end miller can be a bit, but after that, the ability to reload your own ammunition is far worth it.
On a good day, I could reload about 500 rounds of 7.62x51 (Same ammo, I used to shoot a military grade M-14) in about 7 hours.
Something to consider.
