“Ding....dong....Good morning, Pokemon Center patrons.” I was awakened by the PC intercom. “We ask those who used our overnight sleeping service to please collect your things and get ready to start the day.” Hearing Joy's voice was a nice way to wake up. It took me a bit to get up but I crawled out of bed and got dressed. Today was my second day as a Pokemon trainer. It was an exciting feeling.
When I walked out the door of the Pokemon Center, I could see the gym right across the street, staring me in the face. It was in poor condition. There were boards sloppily nailed on the windows, the paint was chipping.
I looked around and nobody was paying attention. I walked across the street and inspected the building. I knocked on the door and listened for someone inside. I didn't hear anything. The door had a plaque with some words on it. It said “Vir di n C y ym” with some dark areas where the missing letters were.
Nobody answered the door so I tried a window to see if I could see anything inside. I peeked through a crack in the boards. Inside I could see some dead potted plants, a high platform with stairs leading to the top and a red carpet from the front door all the way up the stairs. Some of the ceiling was sagging down with a few boards pushing through. There were some Pokemon statues around. It looked like it must have been really fancy at one time. I wondered if all the gyms looked like this inside.
I was thinking about leaving when an elderly man came out of nowhere and spoke to me. “So...snooping around the old gym, are we?” I just stared. “This is once place you don't want to be. I don't know if you'd heard the stories but this old gym is haunted. They say the leader's Pokemon were overtaken by a powerful evil force and turned on him. He died in this very gym. Beware! I recommend you leave here and never come back.”
“O-okay...thank you.” I backed away slowly. He took another step toward me but stopped. I was kind of glad to get away from him. I'd seen enough anyway. I went to see the rest of the town.
At the center of town there was a sign. There was an arrow pointing North that said “Viridian Forest.” Then there was an arrow pointing West that said “Victory Road/Pokemon League.” That got me curious. I had to check out what was in the West. So I walked that way. I passed several people on the way and it turned out everyone here was really friendly. I passed all kinds of businesses. Restaurants, human/Pokemon barber, a dry cleaner, Pokemon groomer, T-shirt printing places, a tavern, second hand store, item shop, small-time hardware store. It looked like this town had everything you'd really need.
I wanted to get some more Pokeballs so I stopped in one of the shops along the way. I grabbed some Potions, an antidote, an escape rope, and a couple Pokeballs and I brought them up to the counter to pay for them. The clerk was really friendly. “Will that be all today?” I nodded. “So where are you from? I haven't seen you around. Then again a lot of travelers come through here so it's always interesting to ask.”
“I'm from Pallet. I just started as a trainer yesterday.”
He acted like he was glad to hear that. “Pallet eh? You must know Professor Oak, right? Hey um...I'd hate to ask this of you. But could you deliver a package to him for me? I'd ask my guys to do it but we're so swamped right now.”
“I wish I could. But it took me all day to get here from Pallet yesterday and a trip back just might kill me.”
“Aww, c'mon! Please!” He was doing the lower lip thing.
“Oh alright. But I'm not promising it will be quick.” I took the package and put it in my backpack. It was a small package. Just a box in brown paper, about the size of a Rubik's Cube. I figured I'm not in that much of a hurry to be a Pokemon master. The dream would always be there. Another couple days wouldn't make a difference.
“Ya know what? You're a really good person. Just for this, all the items you have here are free!”
“Thank you so much! I'll get it there as soon as I can.”
“No problem! You're doing me a big favor.” I got my items into my pack said goodbye to the clerk and left. I decided to continue on. I planned to eat at one of the pizza places on the way back if I ever came back this way.
I finally reached the end of the street and was amazed at what I saw. I was in a ravine with a wall of rock on either side of me and a path down the middle leading up to a fancy staircase with pillars on either side leading up to a gate with high steel bars. The gate had a giant Pokeball on the front of it. Below that it said “Victory Road.” Beyond the gate was a path that went on for quite a distance, winding up to a little building built into the side of a mountain. It was definitely a sight to see.
But the thing that really caught my attention was a car. I knew who's car it was right away. Because the owner came up behind me and gave me a hard slap on the back. I suppose I don't have to tell you who it was. “Well well well. If it isn't Red. I gotta be honest. I didn't think you'd get this far. Kudos, my friend. What are you doing here anyway? Aren't you a little shrimpy for the Pokemon League? Myself, I've gotten stronger since we last met.”
“Well, why don't you put your money where your mouth is?” I pulled out a Pokeball. “I'll make you eat those words.”
“Whoa dude. I said I got stronger. I didn't say I wanted to battle. Here's the deal. Grandpa called me on the experimental PokeGear he made. He wants me back there because he has something he wants me to do for him. Another experiment I'm guessing. He's always having me test stuff for him.”
“You're going back to Pallet? Can I get a ride with you?” I really didn't want to ask him for a ride but I was desperate. There was no way I was walking all the way back there today.
“Well, I dunno. What will you do for me? My time is precious to me, ya know.” He had a smug look on his face as if he really had me in a corner. I only wanted a ride. I didn't really have an answer. “Tell you what.” He nodded to his friend in the car. “I'll give you a ride. A ride you won't soon forget.”
Blue and his passenger both grabbed me. I struggled but I couldn't fight against two guys my size. Blue opened the trunk and they both threw me into it. “Have a nice ride, chump!” Then he slammed the trunk before I could respond.
