I spend a lot of time in the Mojave desert and love it. I've been wanting to do something depicting that area, so here's a little something, a coyote on a little stroll in the evening.
This was my first experiment using gouache. I think I like it better than watercolors. It gives a similar look, but dries faster. I also think the colors are less likely to get muddied together, possibly because of this. Supposedly you can use gouache in a way similar to oil paints as well, which was actually my original plan here, but starting to use it it seemed like I would have to use a copious amount to get that look, so I went the watercolor-ish way instead.

Gouache is fun change of pace from typical water color. Due to the high pigment count, you can mix in small amounts acrylic medium to help simulate oil or acrylic.
I must say, that is the most healthy coyote I've seen in this desert. When I first moved to Vegas, the first Mojave coyote I saw, looked more like a long legged fox. I thought poor skinny thing, those in Colorado are much larger. Have fun with the gouache work!
