Originally "Retro or Retool", a pencil sketch I posted in scraps, I decided to color one of the two sketches and post it in the main gallery. Since it's been awhile since I've done any muddy-themed art, I made this as an invitation to my watchers to come out of the woodwork and indicate your support for getting one of my male characters (for a change) down 'n dirty in the mud, much like in this video, taking the form of sequential art depicting Roland, dressed as he is here, having to cross some mud flats like this in order to reach a soccer ball he accidentally punted off the end of a ballfield while practicing shots.
Granted, I'll probably do the series regardless of the level of enthusiasm recieved, but your expressions of interest will make it happen faster (or result in more material). Once underway, I'll remove the text from this one image and re-upload it as a regular pic since it would no longer be needed to solicit interest, and it became less of a throwaway pic once I painted in its backdrop, something I didn't plan to do. (neither was the use of the oil-paint brush)
Technical:
When I inked this pic, I chose to do it in vectors using Inkscape, since I drew the characters' body too short in the original pencils. After inking, I was able to extend Roland's torso and legs and correct his proportions. Rather than the generic shoes lying beside him in the pencils, I also drew on a pair of Adidas F5 TRX FG cleats, picked for their shiny patent finish, offering a rationalization for his wearing them into the mud--they'll clean up rather easily. Drawing them in as vectors, however was a bit more of a challenge than I expected, what with their asymmetrical laces (not to mention never having drawn anything as detailed as a shoe using vectors without an underlying sketch). The backdrop was digitally painted with the oil-paint brush, hoping that it would take less time to paint the mudflats than my usual method.
Pencil on bristol inked in Inkscape, colored in Micrografx Picture Publisher. Four layers, excluding text, 116MB at full size.

Nah...that was a byproduct of not knowing how to edit. I thumbnail out my comics now, to keep them from inflating too far. Otherwise, I'd spend the better chunk of a year trying to do it, with no other submissions occurring in the meantime.
This will be more like Mudlark Mentor, in length.

Currently, there are seven pages penciled. I want to re-draw the first page, and when I re-encounter the project, am still working out how to handle the eighth page. What's done so far works kind-of like the video linked in the description up to 1:08, and then the part I've only started to work out goes like this video from 0:19 to the deepest part, where he recovers the ball and turns back. He doesn't lose his cleats though, they're too close-fitting to get sucked off, and he needs the traction to get back up the bank :)
I'll bring the pencils to AC for you to look at though. I have a lot of pencil stuff that's unreleased because I wanted to ink+color them for the best attention-getting factor for when they do get posted.
