Well, you seem to have this figured out either just as well or better than I do. A load of what I do is educated guesswork that tries to hide the flaws with stylization.
All I'd say is study how real-life animal skulls are structurally, and to also look at how other artists stylize it to look appropriate. As for who to look at, I might suggest
