Many people have asked me: “Do big cats /really/ play and have fun like little [domestic] cats do?” The answer is: “Yes! Absolutely!”
I’m doing a little series here today, that will hopefully convince all those out there that this is indeed not a myth and in fact, true. Big cats of all sizes and species /do/ play, and in fact, have a lot of fun doing it. Sometimes they play singly, and for siblings that are together, whether in the wild or in captivity, have been seen playing together, whether running and chasing one another, or stealing the play-toy (such as a branch or newly caught, smaller prey-thing) from one another.
In this pic here, is Drifter, as is my entire “series” today. In this image, Drifter is playing with his larger boomer ball, which he’s literally picked up and put into his big water tub. This is a grand picture in many ways, as it also dispels the common misconception that all cats hate water. Indeed, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Cats have personal preferences like anyone else. In this case, a preference for or against playing in water. Many cougars /like/ playing in water. Obviously, some don’t. Drifter /loves/ water, which is exactly why he’s got a tub in his cage. He especially likes his tub in the summer months where he can go swimming for a bit to get out of the blithering heat!
So this is Drifter, jumping right into his water-tub, splashing merrily away, chasing that pesky, trying-to-escape boomer ball! See? Cats /do/ like water! Well...at least /some/ of them do. :)
This picture was taken 04-Jun-05. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 10D and the EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens. The original was taken at full frame of 3072x2048x24b, ISO eqv 400, 1/125 shutter, f/5.6. This image was cropped and shrunken down for space conservation.

If they're continue to thwack the stuffing out of something, then they're having fun. If it's still squeaking, still moving, still attempting to flee, or still screaming in total fright, then the kitty is still having loads of fun. }:>
Did I mention that cats are cruel and violent creatures? And Drifter is their King? :)

(grins) Typically, no, but there are exceptions.
Cats rely on supreme stealth, and because many animals have quite formidable senses of smell, having any kind of odor would give them way to their prey. So this is one of the reasons why cats keep themselves well groomed.
Wolves, on the other paw, while they're not exactly "dirty", can chase down prey as a group, such as a few can set up the ambush while a few other circle around down-wind, which causes the prey to run, heading /towards/ the ambush. So wolves, and candids in general, are not nearly so concerned with being all squeaky clean like cats are. :)
