Giving Autodesk's Mudbox a try to see how it compares against Zbrush.
Just a quick sculpt created from the basic sphere, nothing that would ever be animated or such.
I don't know which I prefer yet to be honest. I need to try both more thoroughly. Some things felt really good, I loved being able to add a lot of detail to certain areas using the pinch tool.
My main complaint is how useless the strength and size sliders felt. I sculpted this entire thing with the strength of the tools at 1.4 (on a 0-100 scale), and still felt like they were overpowering. And then attempting to add detail had me moving the size slider down as low as it would go, but still it was a big fat circle on my screen.
My first impression is that while Autodesk has done a great job with this tool, it still needs the refinement of Zbrush.

I bought myself as real copy of Autodesk Mudbox earlier this year. Compared to ZBrush, it is a lot easier to use. Much more user friendly interface and everything is right where you need it. Unlike ZBrush that has a complete cluttered interface with buttons that you have no idea what they do, haha. Plus, Mudbox has direct "connectivity" with other Autodesk products like Maya, 3Ds Max and SoftImage. I personally prefer to use Mudbox over ZBrush. Its sculpting and painting tools are easier to use and also it has a way easier navigation system =3
Mudbox rules in my opinion. Also you have a good base mesh to start with ^^ Seeing how many polys you have there, you might wanna add more detail ^^ But yeah, happy testing ^^

A lot of what you said there is the reason I'm giving Mudbox a try.
I love Maya and want to be able to move models back and forth easily, and I'll agree the Zbrush interface is a bit cluttered. x3
That said, I'd love to be able to use the tool I eventually pick as a "sketchpad" to just bang out ideas before going to Maya to build a good base model, and Mudbox just didn't feel like it was well suited for that.
I'm trying Pixelogic's free Sculptris next, seems like that might be a good "sketching" environment, and then I could use Maya / Mudbox to finish out initial ideas.

True. Sculptris is good for sketching out a 3D model. you can then take that model into Mudbox and draw out a topology or edge flow on the model and use it as a texture in Maya. Then you can literally build a model using the topology as a guide. And once you're done with that you can UV map the model (I use Headus UV Layout for UV Mapping) and take that model to Mudbox and really start doing your detail sculpting and texturing. It's a workflow I learned from Zac Petrok's Human Anatomy DVD (found on Gnomon Workshop) but he uses ZBrush. But the skills are easily transferable. I prefer Mudbox because it is just so much easier to use and because it has connection with Maya. I myself love using Maya. I do all my work in it, hehe.
