It's been 3 months since I painted anything
I tried to and I failed and I can't pretend I missed drawing or painting in any way.
So I sat down yesterday and tried to paint again
something abstract this time, figured out it might be relaxing to do that for an hour or two. Something interesting might happen and I might regain my will or desire to create.
Can't pretend I enjoyed any second of it
Seems like anything I learned in the past 3+ years has been completely swept out of my mind
Just so you know you don't miss anything when I don't submit work
good bye

Time for me to put my 2 kitty cents in here.
We could all say that you're better than most artists out there, and in our minds, we are right.
You ARE one of the best. You ARE an artist...
However, You have to feel it as well. Yes, we all go through our times when the art is not with us, when our muse leaves us for whatever reason.
But hun, your passion....your Passion shows in your art. I've seen many artistic things in my time.....but very few things i've seen even things I've created, comes even close to the passion you portray in your art.
A rest may be in order, and that is fine..but I refuse to stand by and allow you to "give up" I refuse to allow you to think you're NOT an artist. Cause you are hun.
you may think i'm being biased, I assure you hun, i'm not.
You and I both know that art cannot be forced. That it in and of itself is it's own free will.
Maybe for now, it's not coming to you, but i assure you...it will come back..and when it does, it's gonna come back with a vengence! I just hope i'm here to see it!

Shit happens, you know. This last bit of time I feel like the field of art is not for me, at least in my mind. Even with all this drawing done these last 5 months I feel a loss in ability. I don't know.
Man, you are more of an artist than I will ever be. I'm just some depressed fool that has made some unfortunate decision.

If I were to speak to you subjectively, I would say that you are too skilled to quit, that you should go forward and work from the solid base of intriguing, idiosyncratic work that you have displayed here. You are better than 95% of the artists on FA and I think you should take that into account.
If I were to speak to you objectively, I would say that the only good reasons to be an artist are that you enjoy the process of working with paint and ink and Photoshop, or that you absolutely detest the process of not working with paint and ink and Photoshop. You do it for pleasure, or because you are driven by personal demons. Those are the only reasons that count.
If the pleasure is gone, if the drive is gone, then you must be honest with yourself, and it seems to me that you are being honest. There are many things to do in life that are meaningful and valuable and good; art is only one of these many things.
But whatever you now decide to do or to not do, please remember that in time to come, you are allowed to backtrack, you are allowed to draw, to paint again... if the joy returns, if the drive returns.
Whatever you decide to do or to not do, take very good care of yourself, Katra.

Since when does art come from people enjoying something? Artists are supposed to be tormented and suffering, no?
Oh, and you can expect your abilities to be a bit compromised after 3 months of not using them. But not to worry: With a little practice, they'll be back in no time (this coming from someone who didn't touch a sax for two years in his life - taking it back out was easily one of the best decisions I've ever made).
