PLEASE RELOAD! FA tried to screw me on the file.
This was a scene I really wanted to attempt solo, since it has a personal meaning for me. Myenia was still extremely instrumental in critiquing and suggesting techniques to me that made this painting possible.
This was my first attempt at drawing surf or reflective water surfaces, so. . . quite difficult! I feel like I learned a lot, though.
Red Lantern - Conviction is a comic by
Rukis and
Myenia, which will be posted right here on FA, and eventually (once we've fixed the dang site) at http://www.red-lantern.net/ over the course of 2012-2013. Pages will update on Mondays, from this point on.

This comic is rated R, for graphic violence, adult language, and adult situations. We'll be releasing all plot-relevant pages online, absolutely free, but all graphic adult content will be withheld for the printed release.

Wow. It's amazing. I really like the sky, the last glimpse of the stars and the pinks and purples on the clouds are exactly the shade the clouds were this morning. Amon is a s gorgeous as always. I would say the water is well done, particularly if it is your first time doing it. I'll reiterate what others have said that I'd like to see it in wallpaper resolutions but I suspect that doing so is more difficult than it sounds.
Very beautiful Rukis - and wonderful job; you'd never guess it was a first attempt at surf. O.o In seeing the full picture, it really puts forth the idea that Amon is staring down freedom... there, in the distance, but out of reach. Even still, it's something he doesn't get to see much.
"I stare in vain at the sun rising upon the ocean, and reflect on how my own life seems spread before me upon the surf. The sea is vast and empty as the void in my soul, and any hope which lies beyond seems ever beyond my reach - my attempts thus far to buy my freedom have vanished like foam upon the beach. I recalled my earlier futile attempts to run from the wretched life which fate forced upon me all those years ago, reminded by the rolling waves which sweep back to shore anything which attempts to escape this land's unbreakable grasp. I was lucky to have returned safely to the soft, sandy shoals of my bondage rather than dashed upon the jagged reefs; but this is of little comfort now.
"Yet somehow the rising sun proclaims a small glimmer of hope on the horizon. Luther, a powerful and wealthy man from across the sea has chosen ME as his consort. He could have any boy he wants, and yet he swears I am his only companion at this port. What does he see in me? I know better than to hope for salvation by now, yet I can't help but feel that perhaps there is a way for me to go away with him - to leave this accursed life behind and set off after the warm glow which plays gently upon my face. The ebbing morning tide tugs gently around my ankles, as if beckoning me towards its loving embrace. I've known scores of sailors who have came and left, like the scavenging gulls upon the wind; but Luther is most magnificent. Though I've only known him a short time, I feel a connection to him which I cannot describe. I owe him my life, but even that is not nearly enough to explain how I feel. If I could only find a way to stay at his side, I may one day know happiness. The sun rises over another day, Luther is by my side, and in this moment I am at peace."

...sorry I couldn't resist. Long day and I'm sleep deprived and once again enamored with your creative genius! This is some of your best work yet - it speaks volumes with imagery and emotion. I would love to hear your personal meaning on this piece sometime if you're ever inclined to share. Beautiful!

Wow, this is exceptionally beautiful!
One thing I will say though. To me it looks a little off on the clothe belt type thing around Amon's waist (If it has a specific name, I am ignorant of it, so I apologise xD). I understand it's suppose to be wrapping around his thigh slightly in the breeze, but in it's current position it makes Amon's tail look 'flat' and doesn't really look like it makes sense there. If that makes sense.
Apart from that you've really outdone yourself on this piece, especially so considering this is the first time you've tried something reflective or surf in general. Keep up the good work!

I know you uploaded this 3 months ago and so probably aren't that interested in looking over it, but I was just framing and hanging a print of this that I got from AC and noticed that there seems to be a bit of a confusing interaction between his tail and the sash (or whatever the correct term might be), where his tail looks to be pointing slightly towards and to the side of the viewpoint and the wind is blowing the sash such that it is partially wrapping around him, and the combined depth perception of the tail and sash makes them look like they are talking up the same space, so should really be interacting with each other. I could just be looking at it wrong but I can't really see a realistic configuration that fixes my perception.
Other than that, it's one of the most beautiful things I've seen you draw, and the driftwood-esqe frame you gave it at the AC Art Show was just utterly perfect for the scene... don't know why I didn't mention it when I was at your table :)

I've just started re-reading Red Lantern from the beginning (it's been a while) and it struck me this time around how powerful this scene is.
The sea is hugely symbolic for both Luther and Amon. For Luther, it is his escape from a life of persecution. For Amon, it is the constant reminder of his daily subjection to slavery, and how inescapable his life is.
Freedom meets crushing imprisonment, all in the same moment.
