Babbitt, also called Babbitt metal or bearing metal, is any of several alloys used for the bearing surface in a plain bearing. Typically poured in place as a molten metal it was VERY common at one time.
Modern bearings in automobile engines use a version of Babbitt even today, but they are made and machined to tolerance before installation.
