The step by step progression of one of my commissions for Tsarin.
When I first saw their reference sheets, I immediately got this "Sherlock-Watson" dynamic duo
concept, and so I suggested Tsarin to bring it to a fantasy level and elaborate from there. Their
garments were already distinct from each other so I pushed it up a bit with Ave to enhance the
"east meets west" concept.
This one had the exact same pipeline as the commission for Gilian, but I didn't include the
musculature here because it might seem a bit suggestive for some people. When Tsarin and
I first designed this picture, we planned it to be during sunset, but then I changed it to noon
daylight to lighten the atmosphere to match the implied humor and to avoid diluting the natural
colors of the garments and gadgets.
In the end it reminded me a bit like the starting area in RPG games where the critters are still cute and cuddly.

Actually there is! Thanks for asking~
The commissioner told me that Ave is a capable of doing magic.
When I was drawing this picture, I thought to myself, "How cool would it be if whenever Ave would cast, magical energy would gush out of his armor".
But I had to find a reason for the shoulder guards and gauntlet to glow in the first place, therefore I choreographed a navigational magic for Ave to cast.
So the compass didn't actually came with the map. It's a navigational magic cast by Ave.
The steam emanating from Ave's shoulder guard and gauntlet is actually his magical energy seeping out of him, which is why it gleams with the same color as the compass.

Oh the book? It came with the reference sheet provided.
The gems were glowing in the sheet, so I did the same thing.
Besides, it adds contrast to that area and it looks cool, so why not? :)
Besides, in cartoons/games, when one activates his/her magical powers, surrounding magical artifacts sometimes resonate as well.
