The dirk is a symbol of the dagger used by knights to give the Coup de Gras, or the finishing blow when your opponent is too weak / wounded to fight on, but still very much alive. For the most part, Knights were captured rather than killed, and held for ransom. That's what happened to Richard III. His brother refused to ransom him, since he was hardly ever in the country anyway.
