Is your base color always the darkest color found on the character, or the midtone color of the character? Or doesn't it not matter?

Usually the darkest, so you can better see where you need to add your details and highlights in contrast.
plus it makes for the very useful subtraction method if you ad another dark layer and just erase to get shadows and highlights :3

Base color usually refers to the color of the fur itself there without shading though xD

Ah, makes sense :3 thanks for clearing that up. I've been seeing people using mid-tones over darkest colors as their base lately and somehow worked too. But sounds much more practical if you use the darkest color now.

Not necessarily, if you use a brownish color, the end image will have a brownish look. Similar to underpainting used by traditional artists.

Just curious about 2 things.
1. do you sample any colors form your sketch layer as you paint darker tones.
2. have you ever painted over the sketch layer in a piece? If so, do you consider lower the opacity of a sketch to be much more efficient instead?

1) After adding the multiply layer, you will get the color for the shadow, sample that and paint over the sketch.
2) You can paint on the sketch layer if you have a clean line art (unlike mine) or it'll be hell to cover those ugly lines.

When I'm on step 2, I would get rid of excess colour by zooming in and using the lasso select and deleting, is there a quicker way?

You can use the pen tool, CTRL+ENTER to convert the vector to a selection and fill in the color of your choice. You don't really need to spend too much time on this step.

On the rare occasion that I do digital paintings, this is actually similar to what I do! But you have a WAYYYY better handle on lighting and shading. XD

That is really very clever of you to show the layer arrangement the way you have with those icons, Silverfox. Much easier for a reader/viewer trying to decipher what is and what isn’t a layer than from a paragraph of text.

I did a test with this tutorial but my problem was that the edges were way too sharp and "pixelated" Why did that happen?

I know this is years old, but the reason this happened is because you used a selection tool to colour inside your lines. Either find a way to make the selection softer (photoshop has features like this), or manually colour in your base layer. Great pic otherwise, by the way!
