Here at SCAD we decided it would be super-duper if we all did a Secret Santa Art Trade. This poor sap http://concentrationmoon.deviantart.com/ got me and had to go furry for a day. Amazingly enough he survived.
Anyhow, the girl I received asked for a pic of the Major from Ghost in the Shell. Thank God for that, the Major being one of the only likable females in all of anime. Anime females essentially break down into the following categories: Dick slave, dick slave disguised as empowered woman (see Zig-Zag if you need a good furry reference for that type of lame-o character) simpering idiot, hyperactive idiot, cheerleader, onlooker, and fantasy fulfiller. The Major is none of those. She's a kick-butt, take charge, intelligent, and even thoughtful woman; thus not as popular as the lead from Honey-Star Semen Child 5 or whatever the kids watch these days.
Artistically this was interesting to do, what with combing realism with the anime style. I think it's more interesting for that.

I know a lot of other interesting women in anime... But it's true that they're generally the same kind of personnality.
Very nice drawing -- the coloring is awesome. But there is one thing that bothers me, the mouth looks a bit small compared to the eyes and nose, and the thick-lined eyes make a contrast with the realistic nose....On tyhe whoel it makes the face look strange.
But other than that, it looks really good, especially the skin shading and hair! Great job!

The Major's love life is an interesting one (I bring this up based on your Girlfriend comment); she's revealed to have a boyfriend at one point but at the same time is also seen participating rather casually in a simulated lesbian splash orgy...Odd to say the least.
She's still my favorite though, simply due to her independent, kick-butt nature that's not just some silly facade.
