Hexalaceri - First Sketches
I'm working on a original species for quite a while now~ But i never really got something i liked enough to develop further.
But with this sketches it finally took a shape i like and now thinks are set and i keep working on them :) And so i want to share them with you...also because i just like the drawings and i hardly ever post sketches like this here on FA. (look at my mess!!)
Basic Information i can tell you so far is, that they are human like intelligent and live in complex societies. They aren't reptiles, mammals or insects - but they share some similarities with them. They have some biological characteristics i will explain to you when i make a proper refsheet ;D
Btw. they share their world with lovely animals like this one: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7787296/
They may change some more in the future, this sketches arn't the final thing!
So be prepared, there will be more of the Hexalerci for sure!

People don't really see bug races all that frequently, so they don't understand the differences. They just see bug people with two sets of arms and think "THRI-KREEN :D"
Like how for a long time people said anything with a pointed nose looked like a sergal, or how the general public mistakes Deadpool for Spider-Man.
(That and not even the D&D artists can agree on what thri-kreen actually look like... I'll always go off
Queblock's version of thri-kreen myself...)

I tend to imagine a creature and consider it the official look how they look in the Monster Manual or other gaming guide book. I don't mean only bugs, but everything. Once someone said my character Tetsuo looked like Kanda from D.Gray-man. Like seriously? The only thing they have in common is the hair, and even the hair has differences. Also other person said Kurohasu looked like EVA 01 from Evangelion. C'mon?
I usually only see people say things look like EVA 01 if they're purple and green... and Kurohasu even has "Kuro" right there in the name, so that's pretty weird. I guess it comes from both of them having a hard outer shell? Ah well.
Most of the time though, it just comes from people having no experience in character design or paying real attention to character design, so like the girl on SNL identifying anyone wearing sandals as "looking like jesus" they just don't really know what they're talking about.
Sometimes they mean to say that they like certain aspects of the character that it has in common with others - like an insect motif - but they actually say something a bit different and don't understand the difference there either.

Oh yes...some people make connections i really can't understand or are extremely vague and subjective.
And they write comments like that and think it's an compliment. I mean...specially if the just write "this reminds me of XY". It can mean "oh you just copied that, you are uncreative" or "hey i really like your design, because it reminds me of something i like which is XY" - I can't know if they mean it as critique or compliment.
But most of the time i get the feeling of a negativ comment, if it's written like that. And either way it implies that you are unoriginal.
Truth is, that everybody gets influences - it's natural. And i see no reason why i should feel bad for it. But with comments like that - i do.

I feel the same way as you do and I think everybody does. At least all of my artist friends really dislike when someone tell their art looks like X or Y. It always sounds like they're implying we copied it or that we're not creative enough to think of something different.
Once someone saw this pic by this friend of mine and said it about the male in front "if he was blue, had a tail, had horns and had hoofed digitigrade legs he'd look like a draenei from World of Warcraft". Like, change the ENTIRE character and it looks like a draenei, huh?

Didn't even notice hahaha, I honestly don't care though, especially not about the opinions of random circle jerkers on a furry website! I told the artist my intended meaning of my comment, she understood, and I'm fine with just that :) thanks for reminding me of this though, was fun reading all the people's crying.
Too many people are too dumb to realise that pretty much everything is somewhat related anyway. I mean like no shit it's going to remind them of something else, right? I mean of course they're going to be reminded of another anthropomorphic insectoid creature. They don't need to point it out. It's just tactless. Not that furries in general know anything about tact.
Anyways, great sketch, love your work!

They look awesome! Very similar to my insect hybrid http://www.furaffinity.net/full/7512474/
I like them. I think you've done a great job of adding bits from different species, yes they have bug bits, but personally I think the head atleast looks kind of like a dino with a beak(especially the head on the top left). Very original. Just one thing, with the lower arms bigger than the upper arms wouldn't they get in the way? Although I could just be picturing them wrongly. Can't wait to see what you do next.
Thank you, that's actually what i had in mind (the dino beak) XD
And yeah...the thing with the lower arms is a little bit tricky, they are extremly flexible and can point front and back (i need to draw that, i can't explain it - specially not in english ^^; - you can see it a little bit on the one far right) but on default they have them pointing backwards. When they act and talk or get attack they lift the upper arm-pair in reflex so they lower arms can swing free. That's the only way i can explain it, since...yeah. naturally a six limp creature wouldn't walk upright like that...and so it's a little hard to make reasons for their existence. But i just didn't want to miss them ;D I love 2 arm pairs~

I really think the nose idea on the chest is unique, I've never seen that before! I am very excited to where this is going and can't wait to see your original species design morph into its final form. Keep going, I love where this is headed. He flatters the fauna very well too, that 'beautiful but deadly' look. ^^
With the nose on the chest- even though he is bi-pedal , does that mean they could be some sort of climbing 'predator'? Like, when they are climbing and trying to find their prey- while the head is moving around 'searching' the nose is stationary sniffing out the object in order to keep on the trail.
Ah sorry if my questions are dumb, I'm very interested in the evolution of where things go. ^^ And if you haven't worked that out yet that is cool too. XD
