I imagine he's been feeding off carcasses since a young age, and with appetite increasing the more he needed to grow. Maybe eventually he just had to get ahold of fresher corpses, it's like some kind of gourmet thing (did I ever mention that I love predatory characters with particular tastes? ). So I guess eating someone he'd killed himself is kind of a treat for him. Though when needing to kill and dispose of a lot of people at once, it... might take a while.
