CISPA is back and it's as bad as ever. It undermines the laws that have upheld our freedoms on the net and grants corporation broad powers over your data and immunity from litigation if they use it illegally. EncryptoFurs values our right to privacy and wants to spread the word about this horrible bill. Please don't let it pass the Senate.
Sable: Practicing my design skills was fun too. I haven't been able to do this stuff for a while. It's not great but it turned out alright.
A short rundown of what it does...
- It lets the government spy on you without a warrant.
- It makes it so you can’t even find out about it after the fact.
- It makes it so companies can’t be sued when they do illegal things with your data.
- It allows corporations to cyber-attack each other and individuals outside of the law.
- It makes every privacy policy on the web a moot point, and violates the 4th amendment.

It will not pass anyway, there is nothing to afraid of. Also, there are many ways to bypass the law even if it will be adopted - proxy services, TOR and 2IP, etc. We already have censorship in Russia (I live there for now), and nothing has changed - we still have full access to any "restricted" sites through anonymize software. Total internet control is an unattainable utopia for copyright lawyers.
Unfortunately, if CISPA passes it will be easier for companies to obtain data about you. The power of using a proxy or VPN may decrease. Proxies and VPNs aren't perfect. But it's true, because of the nature of the internet and technology it's pretty difficult to completely destroy innovation. But that doesn't make it right and that doesn't mean we should give up and allow the US government to destroy our civil liberties. Security and anonymity should be an inherent trait of the internet, we shouldn't have to hide or go out of our way to make sure our civil liberties aren't being violated.
While it's true that CISPA will allow employers to request their employees social media passwords, there is no guarantee that it will pass. Last time it went through the system it failed when it got to the Senate, like NowOrNever mentioned. With that said, when it went through the 112 congress as H.R. 3523 it only passed the House 248/268. This time around during the 113th congress it passed 288-127 so there is a bit more support going around for it this time. Furthermore, Obama's administration have already said that they would recommend a veto for anything remotely resembling H.R. 3523.
So while I certainly won't say "don't worry," It's worth noting that bills like this that limit civil rights and instigate censorship have been passed before. One such bill is the USA PATRIOT Act and unfortunately, it keeps getting passed and revised with even more egregious verbiage.
