Right now you could render stuff like that at steady 60 fps with a good raytracing engine.

Easily. Have you seen Maya Viewport 2.0? It's like having a full game engine in Maya, with anti-aliasing and ambient occlusion and decent light falloff. And Unreal Engine 4 will even have real-time global illumination. Mind-blowing.

Wow, that certainly goes back a few years. interesting to see what stylistic quirks stayed the same, even witht he overall improvement in the realism.

Oh what styed the same in your eyes? :) I think it's the shoulder-hip-ratio and the length of limbs :D I always tend to mannerism...

I know this is directed at Scott_Ruggels but I'm also seeing it in the facial expression, the way you articulate eyes and mouths especially... it's clearly much better done, and more realistically done, but the style is still very you in it's way.

Yes. general proportiosn are the same, Expressions are similar, and the fet hve the same "bouneding box" though the anatomy is more finely tuned.

Not only that, but the facial expressions bear some similarities. In both shots they're very vibrant and expressive, and although it's a little bit of a stretch since you're talking about drastically different levels of realism, there's some similarity between the overall structure, too.

I agree with the sentiment here; I can always tell who drew what by the faces of the characters. :3 I think it's psychological. The faces are like a signature, in a way.

to me that good thing everybody needs a hobby and your is surely great one.

It looks like the improvement came from both better skill and computer advancements.

I was amusing my self for the last few nights to read a "PC Diag Complete Systems Diagnostics" software manual from 1994 with a full glossery of terms in the back. In fact, it was about 20 pages of actual instructions, and the rest was a glossery.


A few standouts:
cursor - The small flashing hyphen that appears on-screen to indicate the point at which input from the keyboard will be placed.
processor speed - The clock rate at which a microprocessor processes data. A standard IBM PC, for example, operats at 4.77 MHz (4.77 million cycles per second)
transportable computer - A computer system larget than a portable system, and similar in size and shape to a portable sewing machine.
core - An 'old-fashioned" term for computer memory.
data - Groups of facts processsed into information. A graphic or textural represantation of facts, concepts, numbers, letters, symbols, or instructions used for communication or processing. Also, an android from the 24th century with a processing speed of 60 trillion operations per second and 80 quadrillions bits of storage who serves on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D with the rank of lieutenant commender.

seeing this reminded me of when I stated the 3D stuff using 3D canvas on my old Win98 and still trucking along with the XP.

Been wanting to go back but don't have the money for a newer PC right now and spending the time till then learning what I can with this hunk of junk pc.

Just out of curiosity, how long does a render like the one at right usually take on your i7?

(I'm also curious how long the other took on an Amiga 1200, if you can remember. )

The right pic was rendered in passes and took maybe 20mins in whole.
The left pic took roughly an hour if memory doesn't betray me :)

Goddamn son! Hurts my head wondering how long it would have taken at Reboot's rendering quality on that machine. What would you call it, gradient iterations, have only about 5 values! Imagine trying to render phong shading.

I've been using cinema 4D for only a couple months now! I'm absolutely amazed by what you have been able to do with it! :D wow! Nice Isöand so far :) You have multiple light and shadow directions which isn't natural. Try to use one light source and one or two secondray bounces of light in the physical renderer. Also the horizon need some fogging :)
