nothing wrong with a good old coming of age story , Disney does it well, just look at Lion King ^^
I think the problem with Naruto and some of the anime is the angst (it gets annoying) and the fact that it can be totally random, weird and overtly gory and fanservicey sometimes o_O. Yeah there's no point in having those things if they don't contribute to the story.

Trust me when I say I understand that! But a truly great artist will distill his artwork in order to appeal to current cultural climates, making it successful. So can we assume that those behind Naruto are capable of such sophisticated things.... well of course not they got lucky with a good idea but there are those few smart artists out there~
mmm, I mostly understand what you mean by the cultural climates....mostly, there are a few things I'm unsure about (oh and apparently there's a rumour going around that Naruto's creators borrowed ideas from Dragon Ball.....just found that out, though I feel kind of pathetic in not knowing what Dragon ball is D:)
