A fresh term at school is always met with a mixture of dread and high expectations. Students usually either see them as an opportunity to better themselves and their grades and looked forward to that chance; or are grumbling about the fact they had to go back to class. The battle testing was finished for now leaving everyone with the grade they deserved. Some passed with flying colors, others faced the fact that they had to work to recover from it. A new term did mean one thing that caused trepidation among nearly all students: new classes.
Vincent Tellamapolou found himself doing something on a Tuesday that he hadn’t done in almost two years, walking through the doors of the battle arena in the middle of the week. He’d had his fair share of battles during the week but most of those had been on either Thursday or Friday since he’d gotten into the second term of his sophomore year. The first three days of the week were usually reserved for bottom feeders, underclassmen or people who couldn’t hold out to get in a grudge match. The battles were usually somewhat boring or one sided drawing few people to watch them other than those who had to be there or had nothing better to do.
Heading up the stairs the Poliwrath had to smile as he saw someone he actually recognize and walked over towards him. Sitting there and half heartedly perusing his program was one Persian by name of Edward Bischoff Jr., or as he was better known Eddie. The cat was a regular at the battles regardless of day mostly because he was a pure fighting fan. Regardless of how brutal it could get he’d find a few rough gems among the young and the restless that were common at these fights. Eddie looked up as he noticed Vincent walking towards him and waved to the frogmon.
“Sup, Vince?” Eddie asked, shaking the Poliwrath’s hand before sliding over to make room for him. Vincent settled in next to the Persian as he glanced over to Miss Meow while she made some announcements before the start of the battles.
“Oh, you know,” The Poliwrath chuckled a response, “Managed to luck out and get a spot as a student assistant to Coach Marceau for the term,” Eddie gave a little whistle as that was no mean feat to accomplish.
“That must have taken a lot of begging,” the Persian joked aloud. Vincent just snorted a laugh and nodded.
“Yeah, though I had to agree to help out with the freshmen as well to get it,” Vincent’s answer caused Eddie to wince a bit, “So here I am to brush up on some of the kids I’ll be working with,”
“Suppose there are worse conditions to work under,” Eddie said, chuckling and trying to make light of the sheer amount of ugly the frogmon was going to have to put up with during that class period.
“Want to be a coach someday I’m going to have to start at the bottom and work my way up,” Vincent shrugged his shoulders as he answered and looked down as the first match started, a tag battle between a pair of sophomores he’d never heard of before, “Anything you can tell me about the frosh fighting tonight?” Eddie looked down at the program and nodded after a moment.
“Two sets of freshmen team battles tonight, otherwise it’s mostly sophomores,” the Persian answered, “Though Zeke’s got a grudge match tonight against some loudmouth Nincada,” This caused Vincent to stop in his thoughts and look at Eddie quizzically.
“Zeke? A grudge?” To Vincent these words did not make any sense as Zeke was one of the most unattached battlers he’d ever met. The Zubat never seemed to hold anything against anyone unless they got in the way of his snackage.
“The Nincada has the grudge, not Zeke,” Eddie explained, “Something about Flogging Mothims being better than Vendor Thrash or something like that,” the Poliwrath just shook his head in disbelief before looking down at his program.
“And the freshmen battles?” He asked the Persian again. Eddie grinned a bit and looked up as they watched a Teddiursa and a Spinda do their best imitation of leaning buildings as they tried to throw one another around.
“First battle is between a couple teams that just formed this week, so still getting a fix on them. The second battle is YDU versus WiredRed,” Eddie answered and then winced as the Spinda spun the Teddiursa hard to the ground before falling on him accidentally, “YDU is a group of kids I’ve been working with to try and help them get started. WiredRed’s a slick team with some PCA connections,”
“Oh?” Vincent asked, obviously hoping for clarification.
“Yeah, they’re a good group of kids YDU. Wish they’d pick a new name though,” the cat made a face of distaste when talking about it. Vincent just gave him a flat look since he figured Eddie knew he’d been asking about the connections and not YDU and figure the Persian was messing with him. Sure enough Eddie snickered and looked back to the frogmon.
“The leader of WiredRed is dating Walter Sikes,” he finally offered up the answer Vincent was looking for, “and one of the other members is Weaver’s cousin,” Vincent let out a low whistle at that.
“Just what the school needs to stay upright, another Hipnough,” the Poliwrath quipped, drawing a small laugh from Eddie.
“Well they should be up soon so you can get a better idea about all of them,” Vincent nodded at Eddie’s answer and settled in to watch the battles. He couldn’t help but remember his own first battle in the arena on a Monday night. It’d been him and Tabitha in a tag battle against a couple of other freshmen they’d been having trouble with in one of their classes. He remembered it wouldn’t have been so bad if his parents and grandfather hadn’t shown up to cheer him on, which caused some razzing the next day at school. Still, he and his friend had won the battle fairly easily thanks to their years of working with one another.
Eventually the other battles finished drawing a smattering of applause or cheers, mostly from friends of the battlers. The few in the stands who were neutral politely acknowledged the winners, while those there to heckle had a field day with the losers and even some of the winners. The two upperclassmen perked up as they saw that the fight they’d been waiting for was finally coming up as Miss Meow introduced the two teams. Walking out from either side of the battle ring itself were a Croagunk and a young Bulbasaur.
“The Croagunk is Carla from YDU,” Eddie began to explain, “and the Bulbasaur is Dusty. She’s the one that’s Weaver’s cousin,” Vincent blinked a few times in surprise and nodded.
“Must be awkward at family reunions,” the frogmon said off hand before looking over to the other battler and cringing a bit, “Is it just me or is Carla kinda…freaky?” Eddie nodded with a bemused expression on his face.
“You have no idea,” the cat sardonically said, having worked with her recently. The two watched on quietly as the battle started with the two standing off. The upperclassmen could tell some smack talking was going on between them as their lips moved and no action followed. Eventually Dusty rushed forward and the two began to beat on one another. The battle was surprisingly entertaining as the two fought with more skill than most freshmen. By the end it was the Croagunk who was on her knees and breathing heavily before Miss Meow awarded the battle to Dusty. The Bulbasaur wasn’t in much better condition as she was standing heavily herself. The two parted ways after a moment though Dusty bore a confused and disturbed look on her face as she left.
“Well they’ve both got potential,” Vincent admitted out loud, “but should I expect any less from Weaver’s cousin and someone you took an interest in,” He grinned at the cat sitting next to him who just smirked.
“Yeah, looks like Rodrigo’s up next so this should be interesting,” Eddie responded as a Lotad and a Seadra made their way out to the battle arena.
“Rodrigo? The Lotad?” Vincent asked, figuring with a name like that it couldn’t be the shapely water-type coming out.
“Yeah, the other one’s Libby,” Eddie quickly explained before the battle started. Unlike the first one this fight was shorter and more brutal as Libby literally ran circles about the smaller ‘mon. Rodrigo seemed to fall back into a defensive style and tried to nickel and dime the other into submission, but it was too little and to slow to stop the Seadra. After a few moments the fight was awarded to Libby who waved to the crowd and helped up her opponent before exiting out of the arena. The Lotad slumped off as well and headed for the back.
“I see why Walter’s dating her,” Vincent laughed, “she might be one of the few ‘mon I know who can keep up with him,” Eddie chuckled in response and nodded.
“Yeah, poor Rodrigo though. The guy tries he’s just got so little self esteem its killing him,” Eddie sighed as he talked about one of his adopted kids, “I need to get Remi talking to him more. The kid seems to respond better to him,” Vincent made a mental note on that in case he worked with Rodrigo at all and watched as an Elekid and an Espeon were the next wander in. He couldn’t help but notice that the two were giving each other quite a bit of lip and given how they were dressed it almost looked like it was going to be a street fight. He’d never seen an Espeon look like he belonged in a grunge band before.
“The Elekid is Xander who’s the attitude problem of YDU,” Eddie leaned over to fill Vincent in more, “the other is Jeffery who I think might be the same for WiredRed,” The two finally clashed in the middle for another short and brutal fight as Xander beat on Jeffery. The Espeon put up a fight but still seemed overmatched by his opponent. After victory was called for Xander the Elekid thumbed his nose at his foe and wandered back out of the arena. Vincent frowned as he watched Jeff shuffle off to his side and out of sight.
“Going to have to keep an eye out for those two methinks,” the Poliwrath said, drawing a sigh from Eddie.
“Xander’s a great fighter he just needs to stop acting like the world is out to get him,” Vincent snorted in response to Eddie’s quip as he’d seen that quite a bit at the school.
“I’ll keep an eye out for him while I work with Coach Marceau,” as well as Jeffery the frogmon mused to himself. Eventually the last two fighters came out as a round Aron made his way to the middle of the ring while waving a flag bearing his teams emblem on it, a white background with the letters Y D U settled vertically on top of one another in red. Eddie sighed as he saw it and shook his head.
“Aaron there is the leader of YDU. Good kid, but still getting over thinking things like some fighter fan boy,” Vincent nodded in response to Eddie’s explanation before looking towards his opponent and looking on in some surprise. An Umbreon wandered out and stood across from Aaron. What was odd was the Umbreon was obviously a young lady, but stood there wearing a suit and tie get up. The only thing she was missing was the jacket which Vincent assumed was in the back at this point.
“And that’s the final member of WiredRed, Edna…though she goes by Eddie. No relation of course,” the Persian explained and couldn’t help but smirk a little at the coincidence. Vincent looked over at the cat before looking back towards the battlers. Aaron had put his team flag down and was settled in looking ready to battle. Edna stood across from him looking quite at ease in the ring, smiling and chatting with her opponent about something. Miss Meow gave the signal to start and the two soon began their fight.
The battle was different from the others thanks to the style of the two fighters. Aaron was a thick ‘mon, both literally and figuratively, meaning he didn’t move very quickly and usually stayed his ground while fighting. The much faster Edna was dancing around her opponent and throwing what shots she could, though little seemed to get through his tough hide. The battle continued to drag on causing some of the hecklers to start cracking jokes about the two fighters. It was obvious to the upperclassmen that something was going to break; Aaron was slowing down considerably and had to do something while Edna knew it was now or never. The end came together as the Aron threw himself at the Umbreon for a massive Headbutt to try and finish things off. Mid-flight Edna pulled out a Confuse Ray which reached her foe causing him to almost seem to stop as he was charging. Aaron fell to the ground due to the Confusion with an almost sick thud as a result which left him motionless. Miss Meow soon named Edna the winner who looked relieved.
The two battlers headed off to their respective locker rooms, though Aaron had to be helped by Rodrigo who came out to guide him. A smattering of applause accompanied the two fighters and plenty of jokes launched at the YDU team leader. Vincent looked over at Eddie who was actually smiling at the display even though his kids lost.
“They’re getting there,” the cat answered before Vincent could ask the question, “They’re still freshmen and have some work to do but I think by junior year they’re going to be really competitive. If they stick together and work together,” the frogmon snorted and looked towards the other entrance, knowing that the last part was always the hardest when it came to a team.
“WiredRed seems like they’ve got a good start too,” Vincent commented, “hopefully I can work with them in class to help out more,” Eddie smirked quietly to himself about something and slapped the Poliwrath on the back.
“Sure you will, bud,” He said to a confused looking Vincent. The Persian just started laughing before the two turned their attention to the final match before they’d be free. The Poliwrath couldn’t pay attention to it as he kept thinking back to the battle before, unsure why he was musing so much on it.
