Chapter 5
Perhaps the visions were simply that, visions. Perhaps the visions were just nightmares. Or perhaps the visions were an omen that was warning me of what is coming. I had to decide quickly whether I would heed the words of the shaman or go on like the visions were but a nuisance of a splinter in my paw.
Thoughts kept spinning in my mind as I made the long trek home. The sun was slowly starting to set on the horizon, making shadows grow bigger. But I then noticed that storm clouds were forming in the sky. In the distance there was a bluish-purple hue of the rain sweeping across the valley. I knew I had to get home quickly or be caught in the storm. I, like many other canines, was not a fan of thunder and lightning.
I quickly made my way through the woods, trees and other foliage becoming but a blur to me. By the time I was halfway home it started to rain buckets. Lightning flashed all around me, and thunder clapped loudly in my sensitive ears. My fur soon became plastered to my body, a heavy weight slowing me down. I knew at this rate it would take twice as long to try to make my way home with such a thick curtain of rain ahead of me.
As I retreated under a large evergreen I heard the sloshing of paws in the mud. My head poked out and became greeted by a familiar smile. “Well, well hello again, Miss Wuf.” Glacier’s golden eyes were still bright despite the darkness and heavy rain. A smile stretched across my snout, and I crawled out from under the tree, making mud stick to my underbelly and legs.
“Fancy seeing you around here, Glacier. You’re actually in the MacDon territory for once.” I gave him a playful wink, “What brings you here?”
“I was looking for you, actually. I wanted to know if…um…you were available…” He scratched the back of his head nervously as a bead of sweat rolled down it.
My face turned hot instantaneously. I could not comprehend the fact that he was asking me out. A bright red hue stretched across my cheeks and snout as he spoke more.
“You see it gets real lonely and…” Glacier sighed softly, “I was wondering if you ever wanted to…go out with a wolf like me.”
A huge smile stretched across my face. With an elated “yes” I hugged Glacier tightly. He chuckled and gently nuzzled me back. “Somebody’s happy.” I nodded and felt my tail wag a million times per hour. “Come on,” he said, “Let’s head back to my bed and wait out the storm. It’s not that far away.”
I followed him back to his den and out of the pouring rain. My snout lifted to the sky as I saw a small pocket in the clouds with the stars peeking through it. I wagged my tail slightly but tucked between my legs as more lightning flashed in the sky. Glacier nudged me inside where we both shook out our wet pelts.
The male flopped on the cave floor and stretched out of his legs. I sat in front of him, wagging my tail slightly. He chuckled and shook his head.
“Hey, Wuf?” Glacier cocked his head to the side as he spoke.
“Yes?”
“Could you tell me more about yourself? You’ve hardly told me anything except that your parents died and that you’re a water elemental.”
I looked away from him, my amber-brown eyes growing distant. “I can’t guarantee it’ll be a happy story to hear.”
He got up, raising a paw to turn my snout towards his. “Really? Try me.”

“Let’s start from the beginning. There are six of us in total, us being me and my sisters. Our parents know we were special from the beginning because soon after we were born we were, essentially, controlling the elements. When we became eight weeks old our powers intensified slightly. They went to a shaman to learn more about it and found out we were part of a great prophecy in which we must destroy a demon wolf named Cain. Our parents and the shaman were the only ones that knew the prophecy. Before our parents could tell anyone…they were murdered by Cain…Since then we have moved from family member to family member, never being in the same place for long. Once our family members saw our powers they rejected us as freaks of nature. If it wasn’t for our grandfather, the chieftain, we would’ve been cast out of the pack as defenseless pups…left to die. Now everyone, excluding the shaman, hates or fears us because of our powers. We’re on our own…much like you are…but we still have each other.”
Glacier took in all of the information, his golden eyes searching my own amber brown. A few moments later he stood up and looked outside the cave to the storming forest. “It seems like I may know where I came from now. If you were almost cast off for being a freak…maybe that’s what happened to me due to my strange fur color. I got up and walked over to him, gently nudging his shoulder. “Now look where we are today.” We both smiled at each other. He broke the silence as he began walking to the back of the cave, “Come…I want to show you something.” I followed him deeper into the cave until we came across his little surprise.
“Wow…” I breathily said, “It’s so beautiful…”
