For many years I've had a nebulous desire to make scale bracers, but there is a problem in that the chainmail weave doesn't play nicely when you pull it in that direction. You need a backing to attach the scales to in order to keep them in the right position. That's where the leather comes in.
So this was a test of sewing the scales onto a piece of leather. I used a laser cutter to cut the holes (so I got an accurate grid without killing myself), then sewed them down. Turns out that this takes a lot longer than I would like; these 42 scales, covering about a 4x5 inch area, took 75 minutes. (For reference, with the normal chainmail weave I use for scales, I can link 100 scales in about 50 minutes.)
So this isn't fast enough for me to want to make something with it just yet. I have a couple ideas for other ways to do it to make it go faster, and I'll try those out pretty soon.
Actually, come to think of it, this may be the first patch of mostly-historically-accurate scale maille that I've ever made.

That actually looks nice, should work fine for doing them flat and keeping nice lines, I know Ring Lord offers a scale kit for doing Hauberks and stuff, I have yet to play with them myself, but from seeing someone else who did a scale gauntlet, the links do seem like they bunch up and cause issues, I normally do butted link maille myself using the European 4 in 1 pattern but I want to branch out and do some other weave patterns, there is a Maille artisans website that has a TON of patterns on it that has a few I want to try. here is a link to a maille Bishops mantle I did, hand coiled, cut and wove all the links myself.

Maille Artisans is pretty good, but in recent years has suffered from a ridiculous increase in number of weaves listed, without a good editing or categorization process.
I also like how this technique here keeps the scales pretty rigidly in pattern. My problem with it is that it took forever. I think next I'm going to try a more normal chainmail weave that's thoroughly connected to a leather back. It should be slightly less rigid, but that's not too bad, and I think it'll go significantly faster for me to make.

Yeah Maille is a labor of love... once you do it the first time, it gets easier and faster, then you start tweaking and playing with methods and designs, I ended up taken that Bishops mantle off my helm and turning it into a beer growler cover for a friend to use at medieval events, I plan to remake it and re-attach another but this time I might do it out of Copper which will need annealing to make it stronger and not open up when struck with a sword, might even go as far as welding the seams for added security, I'd love to have a Leather or metal scaled bishops mantle for it but that might be down the road.
