In the abandoned part of the main village, near the edge we have the towns crypt. Down under the ground is where the last rites are performed on the recently deceased to ease their way to the after life. Afterwards they're buried in a deeper part of the crypt.

The major religion of this province follows a faceless goddess. It is believed she planted the seeds that bore the first sentient life, just below the surface of the world. From there her children grew above the ground like plants towards the warm sun. After her children are old and withered, they return under the earth and they travel deep down to be reunited with their mother.

This is why all of their churches, crypts and their dead are dug into the ground, the deeper the better. So they have a shorter journey to the afterlife. Having a body just buried on the surface or exposed to the sun is actually an insult. Must drive everyone nuts having all these shambling corpses around.
