My next big piece is taking a while to produce so I slapped this out quickly to fill the gap.
I've mentioned before that Im not keen on drawing Sonic even though he is really easy to do.
This is just one of the reasons why! Even though New look Sonic himself has never taken his shoes off, there has been enough evidence to support the idea that the Sonic cast have been designed without toes! Characters like Tikal, Big the Cat (no there not socks in sandals), Amy and even Darkspine Sonic have consistently appeared this way.
I quite like to use a characters original look so once I open for commissions I will be referring this picture those who enquire about it.

it sure was when I saw the official art of Tails and Amy in sandals as well as seeing Tikal... hell, for the longest time I thought Big was wearing rubber boots since he goes fishing, then came the newer renders of the character from All-Stars Racing and those ended up being sandals :|
even the cartoon shows were inconsistent with the toe count until Sonic X

People shouldn't need to give them toes to begin with. They should just have them as standard.
On the plus side its like having a blank canvas to make your preferred foot design appear on Sonic's characters but I always try to draw my fan characters as they appear in game or cartoon since its that original look that got my attention in the first place. Characters that don't have toes do not appeal and therefore don't make it into my gallery (this being an exception of course).

Its either that or more likely a design feature to mimic the look of Sonics trademark trainers. In truth none of the characters should ever be seen without there shoes on so in the rare event that it happens, why not make it maintain that solid look everyone's already accustomed to.
As horrid as this looks to us foot lovers I have no doubt in my mind that SEGA's team actively decided that this was the most suitable look for him and most people wouldn't even think for a moment that it looked out of place.

Well, I'm quite lucky, 'cause I don't mind toeless feet. I would like them more, though, if they had 3 toes. We'll most likely never know the truth, as SEGA's team really makes sure that their characters' feet won't be revealed to the public. For an example, in "Mario & Sonic At The London 2012" in every competition, where Daisy and Peach perform barefoot, Blaze and Amy perform in slippers.
Already been over that in an old Journal I made.
In short the metal legs theory holds up until Fox's latest appearance in SSBB were he is seen wearing normal boots like he did in dinosaur planet.
Im waiting for more proof in a WiiU game. HD visuals will determine a better result then 5 polygons for a foot and a model that was never meant to be shown in full.

The new Super Smash Bros has already been confirmed and we are due a new WiiU focused Nintendo Direct around about the time E3 kicks off (Nintendo arnt doing a main conference this year).
There is a high possibility of a new Star fox game as well since the new tablet controller fits the gaming style a lot better then a Wii mote would have so Fox McCloud is still well and truly doable (even though I would have to imagine how his feet might look).

Actually, those are from a miscommunication/bad assumption on the part of the promotional artists that's effectively stuck around, if what I've heard is correct.
See, when they designed Tikal, the Dreamcast couldn't really handle the toes so they just did the lazy thing with the toeless shoes. However, the promotional artists saw it and thought it was intentional, and so they drew it that way.
Ever since then, all of the promotional/official artwork has been that way. Rather disappointing.
As for giving the Sonic characters toes, some may consider it wishful thinking, others may consider it correcting a mistake that should've been corrected before it became a hit.
Either way it's up to you.

The Dreamcast was more then capable of rendering 3 toes... Hell even Banjo from the N64 had badly drawn lines on the tops of his pentagons to indicate a the separation between his digits.
Im not against the idea that it might have been wrongfully interpreted but at no point did anyone step in and say "hmm actually that's wrong" implying that they didn't even notice it or that they were fine with the final design choice. Not everyone cares as much about feet as us so its easy to see how this could happen.
Unfortunately the damage has been done and that's that really.

I'm not into Sonic feet art all that much, so I didn't really have much investment in what kind of feet they had.
Buuuuuut when I came across pictures of official art that showed Tails in sandals having no toes, I had to think, really Sega? Five fingers and no toes? That just looks weird. Even putting lines on their feet to indicate simple looking toes would have been better looking.

blasphemy ! I grew up on the comics : P http://pawsru.org/paws/src/paws1994_9.jpg

When it comes to game characters I tend to use the games as the true source material.
Even without that, Sonic X is the latest cartoon to show off the characters feet and unless they do a re design then that is currently how they look.
Now I could draw old school Sonic and that would be a different story... but I don't really like Sonic and he would be way too young for me to even consider.

he doesnt have to be young :P Sides, source material or not, the sonic archie series has produced way more images of sonic then any of the games combined, :P Its just a great resource. And it was paid for by saga so id say its legit in that sense.
would looove to see you draw more sonic

"No Sonic fan art" was actually a rule last time I did commissions. I dislike him enough to have drawn him in his worst possible form (that's probably worse then not drawing him at all).
Still there's not exactly a shortage of Sonic foot art about, hes really easy to draw and there are plenty of capable and willing artists out there to do him.

Not Sonic directly but the first appearance of feet in the new sonic games came from way back on the Dreamcast with Tikal the Echidna and Big the Cat from Sonic Adventure. Both wear sandals and clearly show the ends of there feet which then set the stage for more character to appear without toes including (most importantly) Darkspine Sonic http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Darkspine_Sonic.
While none of these characters are in fact Sonic himself, every other main character to show there feet since like Tails and Amy in Sonic X has consistently been toe-less implying very strongly that Sonic is the same, which is why I hammered the final nail in the coffin for him.

Nothing. I have a great imagination myself. I love coming up with truly original ideas and combining it with my skills to make them come to life. I have so much that I don't have time to draw all my ideas before I open for commissions (which is a shame) but then every time I finish a piece I get another 3 new ideas to replace it. Its also why I don't have a solid cast of characters to re use. Every piece has to have a new fursona for maximum variety with a new position and method every time to truly test my imagination and skill.
What I don't like doing is messing about with someone else's idea. I have enough respect not to go around adding cocks to everything in sight and I would have double standards if I then went about messing with characters foot designs.
I except and choose to like a fan character for the way they are. If they do not appeal to begin with then Im not going to muck about and change things just to suit my personal preference.
If you want to do it then fine but Im not like that. I save my imagination for my own work.

Ive never really been a fan of his games but his design is very unique I have to admit. Great Mascot material.
He was never meant to look sexy (despite now appearing in more porn then almost every other Game character) so his lack of toes arnt exactly a loss to me.
It does make me wonder how on earth anyone could like him, especially foot fetishists.

He can sweat all he likes for fans but he will never grow his toes back. The aesthetic nature of feet is what makes them appeal before anything else (usually if they look nice they don't smell so bad because they appear to have been looked after) so for a fan to look at Sonic characters feet and go"Mmm I want those" doesn't makes any sense to me. They should be saying "Ew I didn't know his feet looked like that. Im out of here". Its not like the games are a redeeming factor either!
I liked 1,2 and Spinball. Adventure for Dreamcast was fun in some places but things like fishing were just WTF. In any event, I've been done with Sonic stuff for most of my life now. Disney's Robin Hood on the other hand... ;)
And yeah, there's way too much porn of him...and WAY too much porn of Tails, who is, in canon, EIGHT YEARS OLD.
