I had the idea of this concept oh, before Gore invented the Web. Here Liberty Enlightening the World is offering a little insight to the Goddess of Democracy. Sometimes you have to carry a torch for your love, and sometimes you might have to water the tree of freedom with the blood of tyrants. And the idea that the torches of these ideals are also lightsabers for when things needed doing was a good metaphor I thought. Well, here it is nigh onto 25 years later, but things move slow in the Middle Kingdom.
I updated the Goddess of Democracy to resemble Han bronze ware. Her free-swept hair intermingles with Liberty's rays. Democracy has not got the patina of long wear and exposure yet, but she is a young goddess in a very old land. The flowers in her hair are peach blossoms for fortune and immortality. Her dress is a blending of early Han and 20th Century styles.
Both Liberty and Democracy are the same height and precedence, as they are avatars of the same concepts. Liberty's coif has been updated with a hint of dreadlocks, and I tried to get her face to reflect a mingling of North American peoples.
I decided to try to get this . . . . tableau . . . propaganda . . . myth? in some form I could share with others.
Oh, the Goddess of Democracy says she still coughs up foam and blood.
