Sorcery isn't very well liked where William is from. In fact it's practically outlawed simply because those that recieve this 'natural gift' for manipulating magic tend to most often go crazy and either blow things up (Towns, Cities, Countries!) or enslave the masses through raw power. Wizards are a sagely lot and need to learn magic as such there magic is far more liked.
While Williams parents couldn't bring themselves to kill their only child they did the next best thing, they sent him to a wizard to learn to temper and control his power. The wizard however, not really wanting to take on such a task that'd likely get him killed, Sent William on a mission to kill a dragon that was bothering the locals. He was given some minor magical items (pants with the spell 'deep pockets' enchanted into them, so he couldn't get robbed) He also learned to summon a familiar while on route to this dragon. A rat named Fyr.
While useful in knowledge Fyr was not so great at combat.
In fact when the fight did come about William did the most important thing he ever could think of. He stole some treasure while the dragon was sleeping and ran away to try and adventure to learn by himself the ways of sorcery by claiming to be a wizard.
Although he did use the money he stole wisely he bought three Adventure dolls named Bonnet, Daisy and Rose. At least now he had some measure of protection from a world that'd likely rather seem him dead instead of aspire to be anything.
