I feel like I should do a tutorial on 101 things NOT to do when trying to paint.
is there SOME KIND OF TECHNIQUE OR I'm just gonna give up

I really love the technique you have here, but I wouldn't ha e the skill or patience to do that. I always break everything down into black, white and grey then colour goes on at the last minute.
I have never been able to figure out people manage to paint digitally any other way *______*
Pffffft!! If an artist with your talent ever gave up, I'd eat my my hat! I don't have but
I'D FIND ONE TO EAT REGARDLESS XDDD

Only cause I about royally suck at every other thing on this planet, all I have to do around here is draw, I'm so boring!! I am so jealous of people who can play instruments, video games as well as draw.
I really, really suck hard at lineart too so lineart ends up being smudged to create the effect of a shadow, rather that solid line.
I try to think of the image in simple terms as possible. Once things start getting complex that's when I start grunting in frustration cause my caveman brain can't handle anything difficult. Rather than thinking in outlines, I think in solids and shapes. Also working in monochrome allows you to see dark and light better and if you're anything like me and can't paint for shit (I'm sure your nowhere near as sucky as me) simply painting onto black and white using the multiply layer in photoshop saves you absolutely tonnes of time. I don't use any complex fancy things, just simple stuff that helps stuff pop out more
I paint fast because I don't work zoomed right in. I zoom out in photoshop enough too see the entire page and then doodle in where I wanna put stuff.
Have a go yourself and play around with it. Trust me, if you were sat here right now and I was showing, you'd laugh yourself silly with how goddamn kid simple I work. anyone can do it, believe me
