Fursona Concept 1.0 - Leo the Ninja Lion
ARTISTS: BE BRUTALLY HONEST
Well, here it is. This is one version of a couple of character concepts I have of my fursona.
Once again, I have him sporting casual clothing. But I really love his wardrobe here; it’s simple with a good theme, and it’s noticeable but not too in-your-face. I've included a couple of emotions for practice and for fun. I didn't necessarily colour the expression shots in all the way as I ran out of room on the paper for his full-body shot and the text. Speaking of which, some text was edited/re-written with Photoshop as the original one had a bit too much information about me that I was writing (i.e. my full birthdate), and I just wanted to take extra measures.
Yes, I am aware that I have a lot of hair for my character. Yes, it was partially influenced by both Goku and Sonic. Yes, I'll try to work on that; later commissions that I will (soon) post here will show other artists' conceptions that make my hair look way better.
Other than all of that, I really like what I've done here. I hope I learn how to draw good muzzles and fast. That side view with the circular head looks fug-ugly; but I drew it that way at the time, so it can't be helped.
And notice that I didn't call this drawing a reference. As I've learned from customer service at
, it's not really a reference because it lacks any side or 3/4 shots of his full body thereby not living up to the definition of a reference. But it is a good character concept as I'm establishing a general idea of who my fursona is and how he behaves. Until I know how to draw a body way more properly, I highly doubt I'll draw a reference of my character anytime soon. And even if I did, it still wouldn't look good. If there's any artist out there who can help me, please show me the ropes.

Really? I'm glad you like it!
Maybe I should continue drawing. I can improve over time this way! First thing I should do is update my reference; this one's from three years ago, and my up-to-date ref from last year is in black-and-white. So I'd need to make a new one in colour.
I sometimes find it awkward drawing it from the side, but I'll keep experimenting and see what I come up with.

Really? I didn't know my art style was cute! Thank you for the comment!
I was just writing something about that in your request for me! Clothing is indeed a hard element to consider when drawing. How do you get it to hang off the body or make it flow naturally?

One thing I might suggest is a bigger mouth? Or muzzle type deal? He looks a bit more like a house cat than a big cat at the moment.
But I agree with everyone about the hairstyle and overall stylization, just the facial features don't read lion. But definitely experiment! Draw a page of different face styles and if you want to keep the one you have, that's fine too.

Well keep in mind this is from 2010. But, yeah, I totally see what you mean.
Muzzles and head structures are my biggest concerns right now. Once I get through drawing them so that they look semi-decent, I can feel more confident with any other picture I draw (if only slightly). Plus that's a good tip as far as drawing different face styles. I'll consider doing that.

Didn't even see the year
But practice, practice practice. I do like that it is an anime style right now though and a muzzle might take away from it a bit. Maybe even look up pictures of what you want to try and go for. But drawing a bunch of styles on one page will help you decide what you want. I know I do it alot before settling with one. But I also notice consistancies between the mulitple drawings and keep those details/ style that I like.

Just somethin to say. This is a reference. References don't really have specifics like that. Whoever told you that is really picky and expects every character to have advanced and complicated designs all over their body. A reference can be anything from just a single drawing to a group of all angles. Ok I'm done c:
btw his hair is quite awesome lol :D

Well, again, it was
that told me their "definition" of what a reference is. At the same time, they only insist on that term for the sake of visual guides for fursuit construction. I suppose that as long as it's just a drawing and nothing further, I suppose I could just call it a "reference," couldn't I?
And thank you for those kind words about my fursona's hair!

You're very welcome for all those faves on your page! You've got quite a cute, cool furry art style.
Aw, is my character really that cool? *shuffles feet paws* You humble me. You're awesome, man. Thanks!
You'd be willing to draw him for me? That sounds wonderful! Thank you very much for offering to do that! And if you do draw him, take your time with the drawing; I'm in no rush.

Aw, thanks. I love drawing expressions like those. My love of anime/cartoons really helped me with drawing varied styles of expressions. X3
Sure, you may offer a critique if you like. lol If you like, you may also like to check out/critique on https://www.furaffinity.net/view/10604484/ seeing as how it's my more "up-to-date" character concept of my fursona. Of course, for the record, I wanna learn how to draw muzzles better and then some. ;^v^ Speaking of which, feel free to comment/critique on my installments of Sketchbook Practice in my Gallery.
Also please forgive the lateness of my reply as I've been busy with life and such. XP

Sure if you like. I mean for the record, this was from 2010, but then again, I haven't exactly improved much since then. lol You could always critique on this as well as https://www.furaffinity.net/view/10604484/ if you like. You could even check out some of my "latest" attempts at Sketchbook Practice in my Gallery.
