Got my 86 painted. It's going back in the shop soon to have the second stage of the panda paint put on as well as all the Trueno / Sprinter decals. The replacement 16v engine has been timed and tuned by a local shop that specializes in the AE86 so it runs beautifully now. Next up will be bushings, coilovers, larger oil cooler and an aluminum radiator!

haha nice! I hear ya. I picked this one up for a steal at $2,600 but I've probably put close to $2,800 into it already not including the paint. They are a lot of work but so worth it when you get them sorted out. I've driven the FRS. It's an awesome vehicle! What color you thinking of getting your in?
it depends on what you want out of the car. Generally the supercharger is more expensive, but it gives you power at any RPM. I have heard rumors of a electric supercharger that will add about 50 hp and 50 ft/lbs of torque. The stock engine already runs at a very high compression, getting 20lbs of boost to the ground will take a bit of work.
It's a toyota, about a common a brand as you can get. ;p

A few years ago, I had a blue '86 GTS coupe with the LSD rear end, that I got for $50 and a latte. It even came with kouki JDM plastic bumpers for $50 and a latte. It's the only car I regret selling.
Now i have an E30, a '91 318is, also with the LSD rear, and so far, I've spent just about what I bought it for ($2000) in maintenance. Just passed smog yesterday! Whoo!
