Finding Friendship

It was a day, unlike any other day. I, Tish the Koori, went outside to enjoy a peaceful walk in the countryside. It was a beautiful day, filled with sunshine and just enough of a breeze to keep me from getting too hot outside.
Generally whenever I went for a walk, I’d ponder about things. I thought about things going on in my life, or just about me in general or even nothing in particular at times! Today was one of those days where I just felt so down with myself. I couldn’t shake the lonely feeling that was in the pit of my stomach. I’d been thinking about it for weeks, without having any idea on how to fill that particular void in my life.
“Just what can I do?” I thought aloud to myself. A loud sigh followed shortly after this, as it normally did. “I might as well face it; I’ll always be a lonely Koori, without a friend in the world!” I shouted.
Just then, I heard footsteps. They appeared to be coming closer and closer to me, at an alarming rate. “That’s odd.” I thought to myself. “I usually never stumble across anyone else all the way out here.”
No sooner had I said those words, when I saw a shape come into view in front of me. I couldn’t quite make it out, but from what I could see, it appeared to be a cheetah running toward me at lightning fast speed. I moved out of the way for good measure, so that I wouldn’t be knocked over. But that didn’t stop her. No sooner did I move, when she slammed right into me.
It felt like a freight train had hit me, but at least I was alright. I turned around to look for the cheetah girl, and saw her lying on her back on the ground. “Are you ok?” I inquired to her. She quickly jumped up and said “Haha, yes I’m ok! But I should be asking you that question, not the other way around. Are you ok?” I stood puzzling what she had said. Had someone actually said something to me that involved them caring for me? No one had done that ever since I had moved away from my parents’ home a few years back. Only my parents had cared for me, no one else since then had done so, but this cheetah appeared to care, right?
“Uh, hello? Are you still with me here, or did you take a trip to Mars?” She said, giggling playfully.
“Oh uh, yeah, sorry about that, I spaced out for a second there.” I said awkwardly, already feeling like a total idiot.
“Awesome, I’m glad to hear that you’re ok! I sometimes lose track of how fast I’m going I apologize for hitting you.”
“Oh, that’s perfectly alright.” I said gingerly.
A pause ensued shortly thereafter, and we both stood there in silence, kind of like we were in our own little worlds.
“So, my name’s Tish; and you are?”
“Oh, my name’s Deryn. It’s nice to meet you Tish! Although I SO wish it was on better terms than this! Ha-ha!”
“Haha, yeah, funny how things like that just happen. So, do you want to walk with me? I never have anyone to walk with; I thought I lived out here alone.”
“Sure, that would be great, thanks for inviting me.”
I looked Deryn up and down for a minute, taking in how awesome she was. I mean, cheetah’s were thought of as ‘gods’ when I was in school. They were gods to us kids anyway, because we all thought that cheetahs were awesome, from their cute spots to their running abilities. I also noted that Deryn appeared to be a very attractive cheetah at that, but from the looks of the ring on her finger; she was obviously taken and off limits. Not that I minded too much.
“So Deryn, have you lived here for very long? I’ve never seen you around before.”
“Well, I recently moved here to live with my boyfriend Dex; he’s been living here for quite some time though. Maybe you’ve seen him around; he’s a sneaky red fox that likes to cause trouble sometimes?”
I thought about it for a moment and realized that I had seen him around before, when I first moved here.
“Maybe so, I do remember a red fox coming over to greet me when I first moved here a few years ago. He was quite nice, and offered to help me with some boxes. I never caught his name though, and we didn’t speak again after that. Sometimes I’d wave to him as I was leaving for a walk but, that’s about all of the communication we had.”
“Oh yes, Dex is very helpful like that. If it were up to him, I think he’d move everything for me if I asked him to. He’s a sweet guy. I’ll tell him that you said hi, I’m sure he’ll be glad to know that I met you. You seem like a very nice… Er… Pardon me but, just what is your species again? I don’t think I heard it from you when you told me your name.”
“Oh I’m so sorry! I’m a Koori, named Tish. But you already knew my name.”
“Ah, so you’re a Koori eh? I’ve heard about your species. Your ancestors come from a faraway world right? That’s pretty cool. You know, when I was in school, I always wanted to meet a Koori. I thought that they were so neat! Now I’m finally living out my ‘dream’ so to speak, ha-ha.”
“That’s funny because when I was in school, all I ever wanted to do was meet a cheetah, because I thought that THEY were the most awesome animal species on the planet!”
“Well Tish the Koori, it appears that great minds think alike!”
I smiled at her then, and she smiled at me, it was a great feeling. Finally I had a conversation with someone, someone who didn’t look at me and automatically back away out of horror or anguish.
Generally whenever I met someone, they’d back away and then turn to run. I never understood why. I have a pretty cute face, and a nice misdemeanor and a great personality (or so I thought). This was certainly a nice change of pace, that’s for sure.
Deryn and I continued onward, to wherever it was that we were going.
It was then that I realized that I’d been lost in my own thoughts again because Deryn was apparently talking to me and I hadn’t even been listening.
“Sorry to interrupt you Deryn, but, could you repeat that please? I didn’t hear anything that you said, I apologize.”
“It’s no big deal I was just telling you that my house is coming up right around the bend, and wondered if you wanted to come in and stay for a while? Dex is at work right now so we have the house to ourselves.”
“Sure that would be cool.”
“Awesome! You know, I think I like you Tish. As a friend, I mean. You’re a pretty cool chick, and I’ve never met anyone like you before. Do you want to be friends?”
I blushed just then out of embarrassment after hearing what she said. Someone actually wanted to be my friend, and I blushed at the thought of it. To this day I’m not sure why.
“Uh yeah… Sure. I’ve never… Had any friends before. Not around here anyway. It’s been awhile since I’ve had any kind of companionship.”
“Oh you poor thing, I’m sure glad that you met me then. I warn you though; I can be a ball of fiery madness or a sweet roll of deliciousness depending on how I feel ha-ha!”
We walked up to the porch giggling at what she had said. She had the best sense of humor, just like mine! Suddenly my belly started to grumble at me, and I realized that I needed to get some food and very soon as well.
“Oh dear well, hopefully I’ll get used to it, I’m an easy-going girl so it shouldn’t be too hard. Now, how about some lunch, I’m starving!”
Deryn then ran into the house, looking giddy as a school-girl. I chased after her and found her in the kitchen, making lunch for the two of us; peanut butter and jelly, to be exact. I ate the sandwich pretty fast, which shows how hungry I was.
“I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who was hungry from walking so much, ha-ha!”
“Oh, he-he, yeah, I tend to get very hungry after a run or a walk down the road, no matter how long or short of a distance that I walk.”
“Same here Deryn, the same thing happens to me every time I go for a walk. But I can’t help it, I love to walk. It takes all of the stress out of my life and calms me down immensely.”
“I get stressed out a lot so walking tends to calm me down as well. Say, if you’re finished with your sandwich, we can go watch some TV or something. We have cable and Netflix here, so there should be something to watch, he-he!”
Deryn smiled at me then, and I smiled right back and at that moment, I knew from there on out we’d be the best of friends. You only ‘zing’ once in your life when it comes to friends, or love and this was my zing moment. It was a moment that I’d been waiting my entire life for, and it finally happened. You don’t know just how happy I was at that moment.
And so we went to go watch something on the TV, a movie of some sort but I can’t quite remember the name. I was lying down on one couch and Deryn was stretched out in a recliner not too far away, we were both at peace and absolutely happy with ourselves if only for that brief moment at least.
Shortly after the movie started we both passed out, silently snoring away and dreaming of days to come.
I realized that I was no longer a lonely Koori, with no one to care for and for them to care for me. I was now at peace with myself, and having a great time with it too. Maybe things will stay great for me, and not take a turn for the worse. One can only hope.
