After quite a long time I am back in a drawing mood, and to top it, I drew my first scaly ever XP
This is a gift and a trade at the same time which I am doing with
reptilecynrik, he drew this here for me quite a while ago http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3952361/ .
I had quite a lot of fun drawing it, but it sure wasnt easy especially with the reflections of scales since they are shinier than fur... XP
Anyways here's a new piece of traditional art done by me, hope you like it. ^w^
Materials used: A3 sized paper (90lbs / 190g/m²), copic markers, stylefile markers and Edding markers, white acryl paint, some colored pencils.
Time: around 21 hours of work overall (sketch to finished coloration)

Well, I’m sure this is going to be a very long comment… and I don’t have anything negative to say this time. Why? Mostly, because I was lucky enough to follow this project and observe the entire creating process. And what did you do today is one of the best artworks I’ve seen in your gallery and in my life! Yes, this is… by far (!) the very BEST “Reptile” another artist has ever drawn for me!
I’m going to repeat myself now: this is indeed one of the VERY best “Reptile” artworks I ever got. Maybe, it IS THE BEST fan/guest artwork… of all time. :3
Okay, now let me write a little bit about the artwork itself.
Of course, the main focus IS the character here… “Reptile”! And what a lizard you’ve created today… wow. Just wow! Look at him!
This “Reptile” may be a little bit muscular than my own designs… but that’s totally okay. After all, this is your style and you’re a “muscle artist”, hehehe. And frankly, it doesn’t hurt “Reptile” to appear… a bit stronger than before. :3
But it’s not only the perfect muscle body, which I like here. After all, you know your business, when it comes to “anatomy”… so I won’t write anything about anatomy here. But yeah… we both like his biceps and I have to say that his arms – especially the right one – are massive and powerful!! And this biceps is YUMMY!!!! ^^
Anyway, I need to say something about the muscles now. I love that you’ve managed drawing each muscle as if it was a part of the entire body. Some people just put one muscle to another one an “puzzle” their character together. You did not. You did it right and I especially love his legs and the strong calves!
There are three other parts, which I also like a lot!
1.) THE HEAD
It’s always hard, to capture my character. He’s not just any lizard guy anymore… he has character, personality and charm. AND you were able to capture all this in your drawing! I really like his smile, the cute eye and the shape of his head in general. You even thought about the thorns and their specific style and size. The grin and the eye are most likely the highlights of the artwork. Definitely!
2.) THE FEET
I may not really be a “foot fetish”, but… drawing “Reptile’s” feet is not an easy task, believe me. The soles, the shape of the toes, the claws… everything is very specific here. And I really like his digitigrade feet. You have even drawn better feet than I HAVE EVER DONE! ^^”
3.) HORN PLATES
The plates of his belly are very important and you’ve drawn them perfectly! The size is very difficult and the amount of plates is hard, too. Many people forget how many plates he’s got… there are usually five pairs of plates, before his crotch (in this case, the upper line of the speedo) starts. And you’ve done it very well.
Okay… and no. 4.) would be his awesome BUTT!!!!!!! XD
There, I said it. Are you guys happy now?
Seriously, the red speedo fits so great to his body… it’s a perfect fit. And looks at these buttocks… hmmmmmmmmm!
I also love the colouring of his skin and all the details, such as the tasty highlights. Your shading and the highlights make it look VERY plastically and naturalistic!
Highlights… there we have to talk about the scales. :3
It is really difficult to draw believable scales and you know… I draw the “half circles” with my pen. In your case, the highlights give us a good expression of scales and I like this decision a lot. Also, you have drawn blue scales at the back of his head… a nice contrast, how the scales reflect the sky! Yes, the scales are shiny and you did NOT “overdo” it. It is cool!
BUT not only is the character important and well done. As usual, your eye for detail and your love for all the “little things” are marvelous. I love the little kiosk (at least that’s what I think it is) in the background! The small house looks comfy and sweet and I can imagine sitting on the seats, enjoying the sun and… most of all, enjoying the view. Yeah, “Reptile” surely is a great view… like I’ve mentioned before. ^__^
But I also love the swimming pool… the fresh, blue water and the sparkling water effects… the blue, beautiful sky and the fluffy trees/woods in the background. The grass has a nice feel to it and I definitely love the reddish floor stones around the pool! I was amazed, when you first showed this to me… I thought that you might draw white stones all the time, but the reddish ones are a perfect contrast to Reptile and the grass. This is most likely my favorite part of the background… the red stones. Oh, and – of course – the metal bar, which leads down the water. :3
Oh, and I really have to tell you how much I like the green reflection of “Reptile’s” leg on the surface of the water. This is something some people do NOT think about… but you did it and the effect is superb!
The shading/lighting is excellent! My first look was the shade, cast by the sun umbrella in the background. This shade corresponds with the overall shading/lighting in the artwork! We can see that you’ve used the same light source for the character – which is great and correct! Some people forget these small things and just draw a drop shade… without thinking about the general light source. It really works… with the background and character!!
I am so grateful and happy that you’ve done this. And I hope it was a great deal of joy for YOU, as well. After all - correct me, if I’m wrong – this is your VERY FIRST “reptilian” character, eh? The first “dragon-like” character… and I’m very sure you had a lot of fun. Man, who could you have NO fun… it’s “REPTILE”, hello?? And… it’s a mega-muscle-lizard, too! :3
And most of all: this is something NEW for you, as well. You have used a new color palette and a very cool pose.
Thank you so much, my dear friend. This picture will be framed and put at my wall… right at the end of my bed.
And when I open my eyes after a nice sleep, your “Reptile” will be the FIRST thing I see. And how can a day start any better?
^_____^
Thanks, my dear!

That goes for me too, but seriously, as an artist who drew this for him, its like the best payment I could ever think for, a real, joyful and happy smile that goes all around the head ^^
Thats why I draw just for my dearest friends, they appreciate my work the most <3

Aaaaaand... you know that I can express my gratitude not only by using WORDS... I can also give you ARTWORKS back!
And well, it's going to be a new fantastic gift for you... this Saturday (I hope).
:3
Something else... and this goes to all the other people as well: I'm very well aware that my... "novel-comments" may even frighten some people. Most people may think "Peeeeew, what else do I have to add now? This dude already wrote a million words about it, dammit."
BUT it is not my intention to "scare" you... I just love large comments, which are meant to give an overall critique.
AND - this is the most important reason - I DO NOT ADD ANY ARTWORKS TO MY "FAV" LIST! Why?
Because I just think that a large comment is more helpful than just hitting the "fav" button.
This is my opinion.

I agree 100% with what you and RC posted in reply to this bro. I think it's great what RC wrote in reply to this artwork on Reppy. I know that this artwork meant a lot to him, not only because of how well you captured Reppy in this wonderful artwork, but mainly because it was done by a dear friend. It's always rewarding to know that something that one does for a friend is appreciated by them and I'm happy that this is always the case with what you have done for your dear friends with how they reply to your wonderful art gifts for them with the comments and feedback that they leave :). If you think RC left a long comment, wait 'till you see the one I shall leave when the day comes that you depict Furvus...okay...probably not as long ;). I know that writers like myself would love to receive feedback half that long for what we post...but, I know that with artwork it's more of an instant reaction than a written work is and it's totally cool with this. Still, I long for feedback like this for what I create ;). It was a great feedback and reaction to this artwork by you RC...it shows how much it meant to you for sure and that is awesome :)
Wow, Reptile has certainly been hitting the gym! I agree, that massive right arm is definitely the focus.
And yes, his awesome butt is very nice. I've noticed more detail paid to the anatomy of that muscle group lately, with a couple of pictures done in this side pose so you can see that detail. This pose in particular, you can really see how the buttocks tie into the thigh, and how the parts of the thigh join together.

Oh, and I have to add:
This is your first "scaled character", yeah... but you've done a great job!! I mean it. I'm doing my scales textures for 11 years now and I still can learn something new.
I will definitely use your idea of the blue scales... to add a new colour to the highlights.

supermarioartist and he got a tablet with photoshop elements 8.0

Ooooh... looking GOOD! I think Reptile himself gave the best breakdown of it - my only 2-cents on his comments would be to emphasize the awesomeness of the footpaws (since I very much DO have a thing for paws). Reptile has fairly complex feet and toes, and you've done a wonderful job in creating them here, AND displaying them in a way that's both natural looking and very teasing to paw-lovers like myself. The splayed toes on the right foot show off the pads wonderfully, and are such a teasing invite, and the resting left foot just touching toes to the water is SO nice. Great job, and such a nice gift. ^_^

I always look forward to seeing your amazing artwork bro and as always another masterpiece by you
You captured everything for this artwork so very well and for this being your very first scaly character drawn, it is stunning and is captured with such detail that few artists can do for a first attempt at something like this. I know that RC must love this artwork so very much. A great depiction of Reppy indeed bro...I know that this had to be a tricky artwork to do, but you captured what you wished to do so beautifully as always :)

So hot, awesome, amazing, ripped, buff and then some, just makes me ACHE wishing I could see my own scaly bod this hunky... Reptile is a hero of mine anyway, so this is like totally amazing shock of pleasure straight to the eyeballs 9and maybe other balls)!
Just thanks so much for sharing this. It's what I needed today, after the bummer news that I can't be released from the hospital yet.

Wow! This came out absolutely incredible. I can't believe how much detail there is! Reflections on the water, cracks in the pavement, the edges of the scales, and even a lens flare on the ladder. This would be impressive if it was colored digitally; doing it on paper is unbelievable. Absolutely amazing work. ^__^
(Hope that english instead of german is ok by the way)
First off, it's awesome to see that you're back in the mood for drawing again and uploading a new traditional artwork. :)
Wouldn't have expected a scaly at all.
I'm usually struggling with finding the right words, especially for a piece of art such as this, or if "short stories" already tell all the things that need to be said. :D
At this point, i'll try to use some remnants of art analysis i remember from advanced art courses back in school, so please don't take anything that's written too serious. :D
Hope that making it this way instead of pure appreciation for the awesome artwork doesn't bother anyone. ^^
Just don't wanna make another 3line text-book comment.
Now, on the artwork itself.
When dividing the picture in upper/lower half on the imaginary horizon, there seems to be a slight imbalance in the background itself at first, mainly due to the orange/red dominating the lower half of the scene.
The characters presence and strong pose however do make up for that, as his body (uppon applying various composition line) acts as a "bridge" between the colder blue of the pool and the warm orange/red of the pool-edge.
Despite him being a strong character in this image to begin with, the smaller details at the sides like the small house, the trees or the railing, are flanking him in a way that his presence is somewhat "secured" and he doesn't "fall out" of the picture. ^^
Sorry if that sounds a bit strange, not sure how to say it otherwise.
As for the overall image, i think that the combination between the colors, nor the composition lines contradict themself or seem to be somewhat "hectic" and go very well with the theme of a scaly relaxing at the poolside.
(Serious mode "off")
o_O I'm amazed by the work on his body and details
Biceps usually look very strong on any of your characters, but for a scaly/reptile?
Considering their skin is supposed to be very strong and hard if i'm not mistaken, seing this mountain of muscle bulge like that with those veins...wow.
Overall, this is very awesome work. :D

Sorry, aber ich möchte mich hier einmischen. ^_^
Also mehr Himmel!
^^
Und danke nochmal für den Kommentar... auch wenn ich das nicht gezeichnet habe. ;)

Even if I have to admit not being most fond of all MOST muscular characters I have to say Reptile looks REALLY good here and I love how much there is detail in the character itself and how well it all fits together with background and its colors too. Really nice-seeming, warm and calm day at the pool ^^
