This strip is all about exhaustion. Steve last amount of energy has wrung out through a huge adrenaline rush and he's now ready to curl up and go to bed. The soft sand doesn't help either.

But Radox is scared. Steve knows this. His parental instincts tell him to move on, to protect him just by being around him and being a person to talk to. So by escaping one logic, he goes for another and the conflicting logics causes his head to hurt...
