I only have a small number of these left, and I'm too wary of losing them to wear any. Besides... where would I wear it? I'm not going to cons, and the other sorts of places I go I meet people who wouldn't recognize Bea. *sigh* Edd Vick (who ran Mu Press) made these up from some incredibly old art by Steve Gallacci. By the time the books were coming, Steve didn't draw the character like this, and I never drew Bea like this. It was a case of coming out with the tie-in product too soon. But it was the only one of its kind. There were never any up-to-date pins, no t-shirts, no mouse-pads, no badges, and no coffee mugs. I didn' design coffee mug art, but it never made it to home plate let alone first base.

It must have been extremely early, or (as you say) just a doodle. Steve didn't usually draw Bea anything like this. It is a bit as though Edd went ouf of his way to find the least representative drawing of the character he could. But there was something else odd about the pin. It was produced way before the first issue! It must have been produced when only a short story or two had been published. One has to wonder why.
There never was much Bea "product". Apart from the pin, all I remember is one T-Shirt done by Vision Comics. But for some reason they used some panels pulled from the first issue. To be honest, I don't even know if they made them, or whether the ad in the back of the comic was all there ever was. I certainly don't have such a shirt. Even more annoying, I actually *did* a t-shirt design for Bea, in full colour, with the Vision logo incorporated into it. But that seemed par for the course, when it came to Beatrix. Worst luck from beginning to end.
Which go figure, rabbits usually aren't known for bad luck. And yeah, it's too bad, as it actually was one of the few furry comics I'd really cared for. Seems like poor marketing. But then, that's probably the norm for small indy stuff. I could easily see Bea as a very marketable character if done right. She's distinctive, very cute, attractive, and a pleasant character. I'm not much for coffee mugs, but I know I'd certainly be interested in things like well done t-shirts, figurines, wall scrolls, etc.
Btw, do you have the art you did for the t-shirt online? I'd be curious to see it.

Yeah, the t-shirt art is probably in my gallery somewhere.
Nope. Doesn't seem like it. But I can fix that.
Darrell Benvenuto was a terrible marketer. I recall one time he had a feature in some magazine on comics. He spent half the time explaining why his line was doing badly, blaming Marvel and a decline in sales in the field all around, and hardly any time talking up his books! It made Bea and the other titles seem like total losers.

Definitely not cool. And yeah, sounds like he had the chance to really sell his stuff, but wasted it just trying to cover his butt. Ah well, at least it got published, and is a great comic, can say that much.
And I see you posted the image, thanks! Looks cool. I'll leave a comment over there.

*Nods.* Yes. I found 40% of my anthro comics, in quarter and dollar bins.
I later got subs, to 'Furrlough', and 'Genus', but those have...diminished, in quality.
But, mostly, I'd hunt, and leave the comic book store with dozens of issues, and all abandoned, in bargain bins.

I can hardly blame you for shopping in boxes of unwanted comics. Gawdamn most furry comics were expensive! In those days the U.S. dollar was worth something like $1.35 or $1.40 Canadian, so a $3 book ended up costing me $4 or more. I rarely took more than that many minutes to read an issue of Genus or Shanda! And I rarely wanted to read them again. Most of them really sucked when you come right down to it, and you were lucky if one story passed muster. For the same money I could buy a real book and read it for several days.
Exactly. I was, and still am usually hunting for reference material, or, nice poses.
And, pretty furry femmes didn't hurt, either.
The stories, were, I agree, less then great for the most part, but I did get some good stuff. 'Stosstrupp', the Beatrix books, and Albedo come to mind.
I still haunt thrift stores, for cheap sci-fi, military fiction, and other sorts of books. And, unlike the comics, I read, and re-read, and re-re-re...and so on, my books.

There was good stuff. And considering how many titles there were and how many issues over so much time, it adds up to a solid body of decent comic story telling. There really needs to be some sort of guide to the best, and what would be better a "Best of All the Furry Comics" in however many volumes it would need to be.
Problem is, there would likely be a wide difference in opinion on what's best. I can see one group insisting all the military stuff was great, another group demanding all their favourite elf-quest ripoffs, and still another bunch who think they's no such thing as a bad gay story. You'd have to have someone with an open mind, impeccable taste... and uses fine judgement in what bribes to take. Me for instance.
