The Widow Teasdale (oh, don't you cry for her) inherited a large amount of money from her late husband, and the sow is a prominent member of the Daughters of the Magnolia, a group of ladies descended from Confederate officers.
She figures as a main character and comic foil in the story "The Sows Will Rise Again," seen on the Spontoon Island website. The story's a good one, complete with odd puns and a mixed cast of nuts - er, characters.

I'm fond of assigning roles to different species in order to defy preconceived notions. For example, the main characters of my serial "Luck of the Dragon" are Chinese gangsters. Ordinarily, they might be characterized as giant (black and white) pandas; instead, I made them red pandas (arguably some of the cutest critters on the planet).
