Creator of AK series of assault riflies, of course! Basic Kalashnikov rifle is UGLY but it endured and made hystory (it's even featured on some nation's banners!)

I can imagine, since the AK-47 is one of the best known assault rifles ever made. It's used practically the world over. :)

I'd call it sturdiest - it's typical of Sov design (which features hunter aircrafts with controls beter suited for a tractor:)

It's a law of nature, the uglier and more disrespected and undersetamated somethign is, the more powerful and awesome it is, hyena's for example, peope lsee them as savage, vicious, ugly scavangers, when really tehy are the opposite. :P

There have been a number of combat firearms with top-mounted magazines, that have been well liked and successful, the Australian Owen Gun, and the Bren Gun, Japanese Type 99 come to mind immediately. In most of these guns the sights are slightly offset to clear the magazine. Human stereo vision minimize or eliminate blindspots due to the magazine position. This same phenomenon is also used in the Occluded Eye Gunsights.

That's fine, I was just going with outlandish design to the point where even though it was good, it's appearance would be a detriment. Kinda like the BV-141 was shunned by pilots due to it's assymetric design, even though it did fly stable.

I'm not sure the pilots were the ones shunning it. Everything I've read had the 141 being popular with the few flight crews, including Ernst Udet, who flew the limited number of pre production and truncated production models.

The RLM favored the competing FW189 , due to that type's somewhat less sophisticated, lower performance systems, (but good enough), lower cost and its use of less valuable Argus aircooled inlines. Whereas the BV141 used the BMW801 high performance radial, then in demand for the FW190 pursuit type.
